joining me now is nbc news political reporter ali vitali who lives in orlando. also michael hopkins, and sirius xm host mark thompson. welcome to all of you. ali, there are lots of issues. we're trying to figure out what the driving force was that took andrew gillum from behind to the front. i talked to him several weeks ago when he was talking about his platform, which was very progressive and possibly very appealing to people. there were gun -- anti-gun lobbyists or groups that were interested in his message. he had young voters. he had the support of bernie sanders. he had the support of tom steyer. he had the support of george soros. the fact is it is a big deal that an african-american nominee for governor is now going to be on the ticket in november. has there been any reaction so far to de santis' inelegant at best "monkey" comments? >> yeah, exactly. and the campaign did give me that response, this is something that he says, quote, frequently and that this had nothing to do with race. but the democratic side is saying that this is from the florida democr

let's go to ali vitaly in fairfax count county for us.t to the scene, what are you hearing? >> reporter: alex, things are starting to wrap up behind me. at least the oral portion of this where folks might stand in makes remarks. one of the things that the march for our lives students have tried to push is this national conversation about gun control and gun violence. there are protesters back behind me on the other side of the crowd, instead of there being any clashes there was actually some engagement. and i thought that conversation wasn't heated it wasn't tense. people weren't shouting over each other. they were talking about the issues from the stance of being pro-nra. and from the stance of these students who would like to see the nra get out of politiciaauo. one of the students michael sullivan from maryland, why the nra should stop the change they're looking for. >> nra's money has been funding a lot of inaction, right? they don't want lawmakers to take any specific action. they want them to just stay away from their guns. i feel l

nbc news political reporter ali vitali joins us from orlando, florida, headquarters of donald trump's choice to be the next head of florida, ron desantis, who is now the projected winner in that primary. what's the reaction in that room? >> reporter: just a few minutes ago as the race was being called, you have fox news up here on the screens and folks around here were not chanting for desantis, there was a trump chant going on here. and this speaks to the way this race has been ran and won on behalf of desantis. he was lagging before trump came in with that tweet and that subsequent rally here in tampa. and a lot of folks say, i trust whoever trump tells me to vote for. many of them saying, he hasn't gotten it wrong yet, so they want to keep going, and if they didn't already like desantis, they were onboard for him now. and clearly, that's what's borne out in the polls here tonight. trump has had a pretty good track record of getting republicans over the finish line in primaries. what happens in the general with a trump endorsement and these trump-endorsed candidates sort of remains
