let's go to ali vitali. >> it kicks off tuesday and from there the details get a little bit murkier. there's a little bit that we know and a lot that we don't. let's start with the things we know. we know we're not going to see former president donald trump appear to testify at this hearing. he's also not going to speak via letter. remember, democrats asked that he testify and trump's lawyers have since said that's not going to happen. we also have a sense, though, of the contours of each side's argument here. the trump lawyers are likely to argue that it's unconstitutional to even have this hearing in the first place. they'll make the argument that trump is now a former president and thusly a private citizen and you cannot vote on these articles of impeachment after he's out of office. they're also probably going to say that he was exercising his right to free speech when he was talking to his supporters but notably in their arguments, they are likely not going to bring up the fact that donald trump has repeatedly said he won the 2020 election. of course, that's just not true. democ

ali vitali in orlando covering the last day of the cpac conference. msnbc's amanda golding is on capitol hill and msnbc vaughn hillyard is in washington with the new developments on the capitol riot investigation. good morning to all of you. ali, let's start with you. former president trump taking the stage in just a few hours. you have new reporting on what we can expect. >> reporter: guys, this is an event that has almost literally been made in trump's image. you saw that golden statue of trump-themed grievances, the focus on protecting our election because many of the folks here believe that the 2020 election was not on the up and up. some of them going so far as to believe it was stolen from the former president. others telling me that they believe president joe biden is the president but only because concert fied him as such, not because he won outright. in terms of what former president trump is going to bring up, right now his remarks don't have any specific revival of that election lie. at the same time, i've covered trump for five years now.

first let's get to ally vitali. apparently you have more of what trump will say in just a few hours. what do you know? >> that's exactly right. we need to caveat this with a grain of salt that i've seen a lot of speeches written tore trump over the years that don't get delivered the way they are written and that's because when the president gets in front of a friendly crowd like the one he'll in front of here, he tends to veer off script and start airing other grievances. what i'm told though this speechd is planned as a future and forward-looking look at trump's role in the party. i can walk you through some of the excerpts i was just given and some include trump will stand before cpac today to declare the incredible journey we began together four years ago is far from over, sort of coming short of declaring his real intentions for 2024 but definitely continuing to stoke those rumors that he'll be back on the ballot four years from now, three years from now rather. another excerpt says we're gathered this afternoon
