vivek murthy, and i really appreciate your time, doctor, as always.u take that step back here, do you feel like the federal government needs to take charge and make it much clearer what schools need to be doing right now so we don't have this checkerboard of every single place is different? >> well, erin, it -- this -- schools is a really important issue right now and i say this as a dad, also. you and i both have small kids and i am grateful that our kids are actually in school. one of the things that we have learned, erin, is just how important it is for our kids to be in school not just for their learning and development, but also their mental health and wellbeing. what the federal government has done is several things. one, lay out clear measures, layers of precaution, if you will, that schools can and should be taking to make schools safer for educators and kids. the government is also provided billions of dollars in funding to make those layers of precaution a reality and include testing, masking, improved ventilation and other-such measures. if

vivek murthy.ave been to, including a school, which has never missed a day since covid began. their technology and their practices are all aligned so that they had an effective way to stop the spread from day one. i just wonder if all of our abilities to stop the spread in the united states are aligned correctly by the government. >> well, mika, it is a really great question, and i do feel hopeful we do, in fact, have the tools that we need to not only get this virus under control but actually live our lives. that means have our kids in school. that means be able to work, be able to see our family and our friends. what are those tools we need? well, we need vaccines and we need therapeutics, for sure. those are medications to reduce the severity of the virus. we need widespread availability of tests and masks and we need investments in ventilation. a lot of the investments have been made over the last year, but we need those to be implemented fully in schools and workplaces across the country. that
