and doctor vivek murthy, the u.s. surgeon general joins me now.r, you spoken very personal terms, i would imagine someone like yourself, and all of us have this experience where you yourself have an extended network, family members, friends, that maybe come to you with questions about the vaccine or misconceptions about it, have you had that experience personally as well? >> well, chris, absolutely. all of us have likely been touched by misinformation in some way whether we know it or not. i do have had family members who have received videos or messages on whatsapp or facebook or another platforms and they have questions about whether the information is accurate or not. i'm glad when they ask me. what i worry about is people who see information and assume it's true, when at times it is not. if that leads them to make decisions that are bad for their health and they lose out on their loved ones, that is what we are fighting against, chris. health misinformation is costing us lives, it's hurting us -- this is not a new problem but it has gotten wor

vivek murthy. >> woodruff: dr. murthy, thank you very much for joining us. we see the reporting that the delta variants is now in all 50 states. how prevalent is it? >> well judy it is quite prevalent. it is all ownership the country, double beingvery two weeks. it will quickly become the dominant variant in the united states. it is highly transmissible, perhaps the most transmiss icial to date. the vaccines appear to be effective against delta variant, if you are vaccinated you are in good shape. you have a high degree of protection. myorry is for those who are not vaccinated because this ergs tends to spread even more quickly among other variants in the unvaccinated. and i worry like places in missouri and idaho. >> woodruff: that suggests that the biggest worry is going to be no those places, whether it is rural areas or urban. those sedates where there is a lower vaccination rate. are we looking at sort of two different pictures of the country here where people -- where there's a high vaccination rate and a low varks nation rate? >> well judy right now w

vivek murthy. thank you for joining me this morning. u.s. cases have tripled, tripled in the last three weeks. we know that hospitalizations and deaths tend to follow, unless you're vaccinated. are you bracing for a rise in deaths from covid in the coming weeks? >> thanks, dana. i am worried about what is to come. we are seeing increasing cases among the unvaccinated, in particular. and while if you are vaccinated, you are very well protected against hospitalization and death, unfortunately that is not true if you are not vaccinated. we're seeing 99.5% of deaths right now from covid-19 in our country are happening among the unvaccinated. and so that's why it is so important that we take every measure possible to make sure people have the information they need about the vaccine, to make sure they have access to the vaccine and to help them get vaccinated as quickly as possible. it is our fastest, most effective way out of this pandemic, dana. >> former baltimore health commissioner dr. leana wen says the rise in cases can be traced back to th

vivek murthy joins us now. good morning. thanks for being with us. >> good morning.ly stop this misinformation? >> well, yesterday i issued a surgeon general's advisory on health misinformation because i'm deeply concerned about the effect it is having on our health. and to be clear about what this is, health misinformation is information that's false, inaccurate or misleading about our health. according to the best evidence at the time. and as a doctor i have seen the impact that this has had on patients. i have seen people struggle to make medical decisions for themselves and their families as they can't make sense of the conflicting and often false stil media. bue re i something we do about t it is going to take all of us working together. individuals, for example, can check their sources before they share stories online. is it coming from a scientifically credible source? if you're not sure, don't share. but we really need our tech companies to step up here as well because we know so much of this information is being transacted on technology platforms. >> dr. mur

vivek murthy.o be with you, bret. >> bret: let's start with the delta variant and we've heard a lot about it and how serious is this and if you're vaccinated, should you be worried about this? >> i'm glad you asked, bret. i am very worried about the delta variant. this is a version of covid-19 that is far more transmissible than any variant we've seen to date. some data indicates it may also be more dangerous. more to come on that but what we've seen around the world is that it is spread very fast, in the india and the united kingdom and the u.k. it doubles nearly every two weeks here in the united states. but the good news is that the vaccines that we have appear to be effective against the delta variant, so if you're vaccinated, you're in good shape. if you are not vaccinated, unfortunately you are at greater risk because we have a highly transmissible variant that is spreading quickly and that's the delta variant. >> bret: that's the thing. so let's say have got pfizer and i've done the two dose

vivek murthy. doctor, thank you so much for being with us. we know na fthat federal offici meeting yesterday with pfizer as pfizer came out and talked about a booster certainly before the federal government said that was necessary. the federal government saying it's not at this point, but i wonder how far off are we from the federal government recommending a booster shot for vulnerable americans, people like cancer patients or transplant patients who may have troubled immune systems. how far off are we from that? >> well, it's good to be with you this morning. what i'll tell you is we had a good conversation with pfizer yesterday. it's always helpful to see additional data that companies have, but i want to make clear that the data from pfizer is one part of a much larger puzzle, if you will, and we have to look the at data from multiple sources, laboratory data, clinical trial data, real world data from cohorts and look at just not from countries but the united states and other countries. all of that together will go into the decision about

vivek murthy. doctor, thank you very much for joining us tonight. we really appreciate it.to get to this situation that we've seen develop with the texas democrats. the cdc director has referred to the state we're in now as a pandemic of the unvaccinated. but we do have a developing story about the vaccinated. we're seeing this more than in just the case of the texas democrats. but when you saw that photograph of the 50 or so texas democrats on that private plane, all without masks looking like it was a normal plane ride of a couple years ago, did you look at that picture and worry for them? >> well, lawrence, i didn't see the picture, but what i can tell you in general is that if you are on a plane, if you are on a train, if you are on a bus or in a subway, the guidelines say that you should be wearing masks to protect yourself and to protect others. the vast majority of infections we're seeing, lawrence, are ng most the unvaccinated. and the majority of hospitalizations and deaths, more than 99.5% of deaths are among the unvaccinated. but the vaccine, as highly as effecti

vivek murthy. dr. murthy, welcome back to the "newshour." help us understand now, this is confusing for a lot of people. we know that masking helps to contain virus spread. so why not change the masking guance so more people wear them now? >> doctor: it is a great question. let's review what we know. we know masks are helpful in preventing spread, but what we also know is from the science that the c.d.c. shared about two months ago, if you are fully vaccinated, your risks of getting sick or transmitting the virus is low. now, there are circumstances where individuals may want to consider wearing masks, where counties may decide to put mitigation measures like masks requirements back in place. those would be, for example, if they had a lot of virus circulating, as some communities do. if you're an individual who has kids at home who are not vaccinated, or you, yourself, or immunocompromised, they may decide they want to wear masks again. in a moment like this, when we're seeing covid spreading so likely because of the delta variant, it is pru
