vivek murthy. thank you so much for being with us on this, sir. okay.gs first before i ask about this booster, how much drop in protection are we talking about over time? >> well, good morning. good to be with you as well. a few things i would say. number one the drop in protection that we're seeing is against mild to moderate disease. now, really important distinction here because the protection that we see from the vaccines against the worst of covid, hospitalizations, severe disease in death, that remains strong. that is why people who are fully vaccinated today should still feel good. it's why we don't think you need to go out and get a booster today. but using our clinical judgment, our feeling is this trend in decline in protection will continue over the months ahead and may extend actually to a reduction in protection against those severe outcomes. that's what we want to be ahold of. and that's why yesterday we announced a plan on september 20th to start boosting people who are at their eighth month mark after their second dose. this is listen co

vivek murthy joins us now.espite those numbers in florida, the governor there, ron desantis, says there will be no new restrictions and he'll not mandate masks. when you hear that, does it concern you? >> well, gayle, good morning to you as well. and i am deeply concernrned abo what's hapappening in florida a certainly in many parts of our country with cases rising.g. and i think w what we have seen time and timee again with covid-19 is that it's going to throw curveballs at us. delta variant is the latest curveball. what we have to be ready to do is increase our vaccination rates while using mitigation measures, including wearing masks. that's one of the reasons the cdc revised its guidance last weekek to encourage more mask usage because we know it's a powerful w way to reduce the spread of the virus while getting vaccination rates up. >> that's the problem when the cdc revised its masks. some think the cdc doesn't know what it's doing. the cdc is being accused of flip-flopping. i know what you all are saying

vivek murthy is a member of president biden's covid task force, and he joins me now.tor, thank you very much for being here. explain for everyone watching and listening exactly what is it that the administration based this decision on to offer boosters? dr. murthy: thank you. let me lay out what we announced today and why we made this decision. what we announced is beginning september 20, we plan to offer booster shots to adults who are 18 and up who have received the moderna or pfizer mnra vaccines. th would be a third dose of vaccine. this will be pending before an independent evaluation of the fda and the advisory committee. the reason we made that decision, we have been tracking data very closely over the last many months to understand the level of protection that the vaccines are giving us. here is the good news. the protection the vaccines give us against hospitalization and death has remained very high. but whahas concerned us is that the protection against mild and moderate disease seems to be declining. and as we look forward, if that the client continues, we

surgeon general vivek murthy this morning on the nation's top health officials and why they're now recommending this vaccine booster shot. the white house is launching another massive messaging campaign around the decision to make boosters available for pfizer and moderna recipients eight months after their second dose. much of the country, 49% to be exact, is not even fully vaccinated yet. that's the two shots, let alone ready for a third booster shot. a lot of those people are younger kids who still aren't eligible for one shot of any vaccine. and just 59.6% of americans, ages 12 and up, are fully vaccinated as of today. with me now is director of the national institutes of health, dr. francis collins. let's start with these concerns about the vaccine's protection, the really series protection here against severe disease, which i think is what most people are worried about, and the idea that that fades. eight months isn't like a light switch here. should people expect to be at higher risk of those kinds of infections as they move closer to that eight-month mark? >> there'sdesignation. it's in

vivek murthy joins me now. dr.hank you for coming on the program. >> well, good to be with you, br brian>> it's been several weeks since you issued a surgeon general warning about misinformation about what companies, platforms, governments can do. have you sensed any improvements in the last few weeks since you issued your warning? >> we've certainly seen much more awareness around the risk and consequences of health misinformation. we see more engagement from some of the technology platforms and growing awareness and interest from the public and the steps that they can take to reduce the spread of misinformation, including by being more selective about what they share online. so that's all good news. but the challenging news is that we still have a long way to go. we are still seeing misinformation spread like wildfire on social media sites in particular. we're still seeing many people in our communities, two-thirds of our unvaccinated individuals who believe myths about covid-19 vaccination or think those myths m
