�*s russia editor, steve rosenberg, he was clear that the winner of the three—year war there was vladimir. john, i don't know if there's an equivalent expression in russian for "all his christmases have come at once", but that's basically what's happened for vladimir putin. as the months go past. but how are people reacting to the trump revolution? i spoke to the bbc�*s chief presenter in washington, caitriona perry. the softening of the position towards russia, that's not shared by the length and breadth of the republican party, and it's not shared by, i would say, the majority of the american population. as in many other countries, there's a lot of issues on the ground that voters are concerned about that are still very high up the agenda, like cost of living, fuel prices and so on. we've just heard the man who'll probably be the new chancellor of germany say that nato may not even exist byjune. is anything of that sort of percolating through in washington? well, we know how president trump feels about nato. it's the same way he felt during his first term in office. his approach to russ

so no comment from vladimir putin.have had comment from dmitry medvedev, the former russian president, who is now deputy head of the russian security council. he, on social media, wrote that after what had happened, he hopes that america will stop military assistance to ukraine. of course, that's what the russians would love to happen. it's been an incredible two weeks or so, which has turned everything on its head. it began with the putin—trump telephone call on february 12th, the start of us—russian talks, with no concessions coming from moscow. we had the munich security conference and that open schism between america and europe, and now the breakdown in relations between the united states and ukraine. and throughout all of this, there has been no sign that moscow is ready to make any concessions, ready for compromise, ready to give back any of the territories it has seized over the last three years. and after what we saw in the white house, that will not have changed. quite the opposite, i think. delegations are me

but sometimes i worry that actually trump's on the side of vladimir putin. and if that's the case, we're in big trouble. >> i mean, i don't think you really need to find better evidence, ambassador, to kind of answer your own question when it comes to whether or not, as some people have said, trump is putin's lapdog. but some experts are also witnessing, including you watching this interaction in the oval office and saying that this was an ambush, that it was a setup in order to bring zelenskyy in, to humiliate him publicly. even trump saying at the end before he took questions, though, this is going to make great tv. but this is not just fictionalized tv. there are thousands, tens of thousands of lives that have been lost and that are at stake. so who really ended up looking like the fool at the end of this? trump. vance? >> well, i don't know if it was an ambush on purpose, but it sure felt that way. and i'm sure this will play great for their base. and it felt at times that that's what this was all about. you know, i used to work at the white house. i use

vladimir putin is a dictator, et cetera. nevertheless, we wanted to explain to people that while donald trump ultimately, according to the people we spoke to, does believe that he made a bit of a mistake there, and he sort of cleaned up his remarks. he also thinks that the full story hasn't been told. there's two very. >> specific dates. >> to sort of understand. the broader picture that trump views the ukraine conflict in. in 2008, uh, nato and european allies extended a sort of tentative offer to ukraine to become a nato member. and this was something that blindsided putin and drove him crazy and stoked his paranoia. in 2014, closer to home, a pro president yanukovych wound up fleeing ukraine for moscow. and that was after large scale protests and putin suspected the united states was behind it. now there's no real evidence to show that. but that's what he suspects. and the obama government, state department official victoria nuland was caught on a phone call where she was sort of showing that the united states was more in

with vladimir putin that he could leverage if he wants to.h, so that does make him different in a sense. he's always been friendly with vladimir putin. um, if he can leverage that to get putin to give us. and i don't mean just ukraine, i mean ukraine, the united states, the world, what we need, which is a stop to russia's aggressive military, you know, military, foreign policy, where they're invading their neighbors. don't forget, they're still occupying georgia, republic of georgia, the country, 20% of it. so we need to stop this invasion. and the aggressive foreign policy by vladimir putin. >> and do you think that is achievable? do you think that that putin can be stopped his his aggressive nature? >> yes. >> um, because he can be it can be demonstrated that he will have to pay a high price if he goes any further. but in order to stop him, he only understands force and strength. and so we have to be able to show we, the allies of ukraine, that we will stand behind ukraine. and if he crosses the line, that there will be a military punishmen

remember, that's something vladimir putin has been accused of a war crime by the international criminal court for being involved in, and a larger return of prisoners of war or exchange of those. so lots of ideas being floated here, but frankly, none of them will get traction without support from the united states. we know that keir starmer has on saturday and friday, after the blowup in the oval office, spoken to president trump, zelenskyy himself giving a wide ranging press conference in london after that substantial meeting with european leaders and indeed king charles the third, in which he said he was still willing to sign the rare earth minerals deal, i should point out, trump administration said it's not at present on the table. he also refuted the idea that, you know, he could somehow just step aside. he said, look, if you want to have elections here, then you've got to persuade me to not run in them. and i have to then be negotiated with. and my price for that is ukraine joining nato. and that would mean my mission is complete and i don't mind stepping aside. so obfuscating the
