[music] our stories have power was the training that was developed by faces and voices of recovery in conjunction with funding from samhsa. people in the recovery community have been looking for a long time for language that they can use to really describe what it is that they've been through and what it is that they're trying to advocate for. so faces and voices of recovery has used the training as an opportunity create a video, a dvd, that can be you know sent around the country, can be put on the internet, can really be used in trainings and in workshops around the country so that more people have the terminology that's necessary to communicate our, our message to the broadest possible audience. there are three major sections of the dvd. the first is a 90- minute training video which takes you through faces and voices of recovery's media and message training, the actual core training itself. the second part of the dvd is a section called, "keys to successful interviews". that section really is helpful for people who are going to be going into an interview situation and they need to

of recovery, and enjoy each other's company. community members spread the word of recovery by wearing t-shirts promoting recovery every friday during september. getting the recovery voice out there is an important goal of friends and neighbors in rock springs, wyoming. the celebrate recovery walk and rally in lansing, michigan, commemorated the successes of those recovering from addictions to alcohol and other drugs. participants joined together and marched to the state capital for a celebration featuring guest speaker and advocate, kitty dukakis. recovery friends and advocates in honolulu, hawaii, participated in a charity recovery walk and 5k run. following the run, attendees enjoyed music, food, popsicles, volleyball, and fellowship. members of the daytona beach, florida, community celebrated recovery with a motorcycle ride, entertainment, testimonies, and information on supportive services. the free celebration started with a bike ride to the beautiful halifax river for a dare extreme stunt rider show with a prevention message to young people. also included in the event was a talent contest, toys for kids, food, and fun! mohave county substance abuse treatment educ

you have recently gotten involved with faces and voices of recovery, laura, tell me why you got involved with faces and voices of recovery and why you, what brought you to this work? i am so thrilled to be part of this organization, i'm really proud to be part of it. they have a message that is very near and dear to my heart, which is sharing the message of hope and recovery, to having a new way of life. i took away from the messaging that i attended last fall, that there are right words to use and, and not so good words to use. for example, we want to talk about recovery, we don't want to talk about addiction. addiction is where people are stuck in the problem. recovery is where people get into the solution and that's what it's all about, giving people hope and healing and a new way of life. some of the main questions that we receive is, what kind of training is this, you know? and when you say, media message training, that means that if the media... put a microphone and camera to my face and say, joe, i heard that you used drugs and alcohol before. and who are you? and how do i respond

of the state capital in lansing for a rally for recovery. highlights of the event included guest speakers from the treatment field, policy makers, and the voices of those in recovery. additionally, there was live music and fun activities for kids. in honor of recovery month, the focus ministry at gethsemane baptist church hosted a faith-based open house in the bronx. the freedom only comes under surrendering ministry is a spiritual-based, christ-centered ministry for substance abuse prevention. the event featured food, guest speakers, music from the choir, and group praise. choices recovery services made their contribution to recovery month by holding a recovery in the park celebration in sioux falls, south dakota. attendees enjoyed a nice day outdoors and were able to celebrate recovery together with food, fun, games, and prizes. the maryland state alcohol and drug abuse administration held a kickoff festival for prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery resource providers in catonsville, maryland. the event was highlighted by the governor's proclamation and also featured breakfast, speakers, and vendor displays. preferred family heal

ondcp and i and lots of people at ondc are very, very proud to be working with the faces and voices of recovery, which is one of the organizations, and with samhsa on-on doing everything we possibly can to support this. alexandre, how important is that to have support for recovery as you're looking to conduct further studies in that field? well, it's critical because so far there's been an enormous amount of federal investment which has contributed landmark findings and really lifesaving findings in many ways, scientifically speaking, in terms of the ideology of addiction, what is the cause, as tom said, it's a brain disease, it's a biological condition, and it's really started to contribute significantly to moving away from the stigma where people looked at addiction, alcoholism, drug dependence as a moral failing or the person was just bad and weak to something where the person has a condition, which is perhaps chronic, but it is a condition that can be managed. so we have a science of addiction which has saved many lives. what we don't have is the science of recovery right now. there's much
