we had our regular volunteers volunteering. we had such an overwhelming response from city employees, from the members of the general public that we had way more volunteers than we could ever have hoped for. we had to come up with a training program. i mean, there are different functions of this whole operation. you were either, you know a check-in person. you were a greeter. you were part of the license issuing unit. you were deputy marriage commissioner, or you were on the recording side. each one of those functions required a different set of skills, a different oath of office if they needed to be sworn in as a deputy county clerk to issue marriage licenses or as a deputy county recorder if they were going to register the marriage licenses or the deputy marriage commissioner if they were going to be performing ceremonies. >> donna, place the ring on her ring finger. >> the marriage commissioner training was only about a half hour. it was very simple. very well run, very smooth and then we were all sworn in. >> they said we w

it is national volunteer day and thousands of volunteers are doing what they can in our neighborhoods. allie rasmus is live. >> reporter: this is an adult and senior center for people in the community here in redwood city. we should start seeing volunteers going through these doors. the project they are going to be working on is just across these doors. in order for them to do this project it's a big project. they're going to take down walls to create a larger area. 3,000 volunteers are helping out and this is all because it's national rebuilding day. they are taking place at this site along with schools in the peninsula. how does this help, is this something that you will be able to do without the help of this national organization. >> this is enormous for us just because funds are tight right now and it would be very hard for us to find the funding and rebuild this without this sort of volunteer effort. so we are so grateful to rebuilding peninsula. it wouldn't be possible other wise. i think they recognized how important this center is and how necessary a lounge was. so we're so gr

a large part of my life has really been to work with volunteers. you get the greatest things done when you do it from the heart. not doing it for money. not for fame or politics. today, what you are going to be doing is offering probably one of the few smiles that people on the streets get. a genuine look directly into the eye. an offer of assistance of how i can help you. what do you need? what can we do today to make their life a little easier? and then, hopefully, with all of this great service that we have today sponsored by cpmc, and i think all the volunteers here today, but i also want to note that there will be a moment today, hopefully, that you will be able to talk to somebody who is on the streets and maybe suggest that there is a way out in the long term. that is what these opportunities have suggested to us. there is always a way out. you do not have to be stopped, and you can get the services here today, but you can also get them every day. a life can be changed. you are part of that great opportunity. you are going to be part of that

we recognize and honor volunteer efforts of mr. john johnson, who for nearly three years dedicated his time and energy for improving and beautifying parts of golden gate park, including the rhododendron dell and the botanical garden. he helps staff keep the garden clean. it's in became obvious that he possessed an attention to detail and the creative spirit to move on to some of the finer tasks of maintaining a japanese- style garden. he eventually became a skilled kronor. he is very dedicated to the work, and the japanese tea garden is better for him. he is also a pleasure to be around. each year, the parts department depends on more than 129 hours from volunteers. we think mr. johnson for his continued effort to improve our park spaces. we thank you both. i think we would like to present these to you and person. -- in person. we have people volunteering in both our recreational programming and park side. please volunteer. please get involved. our website is sfrecpark.org. it is very easy. one click can give you all of the information about volunteering in our parks and rec centers that you would want. as for just a touch on the couple of other points, as for smoking pot, no, that's not a good thing in our parks. i actually just left -- mr. mayor, i don't know if you know this, today is april 20th and it's 4/20 on 4/20 there's a little party with sharon meadow. i was with a few of your colleagues and still getting texts. statewide phenomena apparently where a lot of people get the munchies at around 4:30 or 4:40. we want to keep our parks safe for all of our park users. it's amazing, we actually comprise about 12% of all of the city's land. that gets to the resource question. it's really difficult to cover pan trol every nook and cranny and every neighborhood park in our system. which gets back to your first point, why we need the help. so yes, yes, and please. thank you. all the physicians and volunteers, medical professionals, are volunteers. and it's not just dental services that they're offering. with the 80 chairs there are more than 50 medical exam stations and 20 vision exam stations. this clinic is organized by an international non-profit group called remote area medical. they've done about 600 other clinics like this, all across the u.s. we spoke to the founder and ceo of the organization about the need for these services and who can receive care here. >> the criteria is you've got to show up and you've got to show up early. we don't ask any questions. there's no government money involved in this. it's totally free. no taxpayer funds involved. but you got to show up. and the only place we'll ask you is where does it hurt? >> some people started waiting in line for this clinic as early as 10:00 last night. hundreds of people spent the night outside the coliseum so they could secure a ticket to get a spot into the clinic today. but this clinic goes on for the next three days. it goes on until tuesday, april 12th. orga
