we do have management sources open in wimberley, for people who want to volunteer or need volunteers at the c yprus church. the san marcos volunteer center is at the old fish hatchery, also open 8-5 p.m. they are also operating coordinated with the various cities and americorp is helping us out with that. we have hundreds and thousands of people that want to help and do things and that is great. as the weekend gets closer, we'll be in a better position to facilitate those folks and get them where they need to be. these volunteer centers are important to making this happen. if you show up in our jurisdiction for a volunteer assistance you have to check in with our volunteer resource center to help us keep track of who is where and what they're doing. today, for example, we'll have a small group of people in san marcos between 9:00 and 2 p.m., doing a little work here in san marcos. wimberley, we're getting -- they're still in the middle of the search and rescue operations. and we're still trying to get those things coordinated down there. the call center has been set up at 512-754-227

it's really painstaking work and local officials are trying to warn away volunteers not just for theildlife that can be hurt by well-meaning people but can be hurt by the oil. this is the migratory season for the iconic marine mammals that swim up and down this coast. all are moving to their feeding areas for the summer and they come right through here. they are literally swimming right through what is in the ocean right now. and this is the eve of memorial day weekend. so we are really just seeing an unfolding tragedy, one that is not clear how they are going to contain going forward. >> jacob do you have any idea how far out into the ocean the oil has spread. >> reporter: the estimate is it is about 12 square miles and it will continue to spread beyond that. this is simply the nature of a spill into the ocean. it does not seem as if there is an active spill from the company. the problem is that oil has made its way into the surrounding landscape three-quarters more is out in the landscape, and that means it will slowly make its way into the ocean and the aquifers in the area. >> i
