we look at that to include volunteerism. stakeholder and community involvement is extremely critical. we put it at number one. when we talk about community benefits, it is critical that the community, and that involves all of the stakeholders, they are involved in the oversight review and modification of community benefits programs. they need to be informed, they need to understand what is being proposed. they want to understand what their role is in terms of input. we have got this from a lot of stakeholder conversations that we have had. people don't want to be seen as a token. they want to be seen as an interval -- integral part of the programs. there are very good examples in the inventory of community involvement activities. that includes the task force, work that has been done not too long ago. supervisor maxwell: why would that be considered a community benefit? that benefits sfpuc, because in those people are involved in making sure they are educating themselves, how does that benefit the community? >> you are right,

the country hold a number of events did advocate and celebrate his but -- restorative justice, volunteerism leadership. san francisco pier court is a city funded peer to peer restorative justice program that provides leadership opportunities and restorers -- a sort of opportunities to actions in the community rather than advancing through the justice system. restorative justice also gives a strong role to the community in promoting offender accountability and community safety rather than a more punitive approach focused on punishment and deterrence. in the past two years, the board has participated in national youth court month by recognizing the youth that volunteer with the san francisco peer court. today, supervisor mar and i have invited the 23 young men and women who are serving this year to be honored. supervisor mar, do you have anything to add? supervisor mar: i was going to say, the 23 of you and the many hundreds of others that have come through the program are really true community-based example of restorative justice but also youth empowerment and you are the leaders of tomorrow

it's really about volunteerism and communities. >> how did you choose the schools?rd from the community. so we heard from people in baton rouge, nashville, detroit, three schools in los angeles. and when you hear the stories about ceiling tiles falling down, rats crawling across the floors, toilets that don't work in schools. we couldn't say no to the stories. >> how are the kids reacting once this transformation happens about going back to school and wanting to learn? >> i mean, obviously they are overjoyed to have new science labs and new football fields and whatnot. but the work needs to be continued long after we're gone. this is not about coming in to make over a school. it's about communitying getting engaged around education. so we hope -- the show is called "school pride". we hope the skids have a newfound since of school pride and they'll take care of the schools. we hope they know the sign that says we don't care about you is taken down. >> we just had education nation at nbc. we highlighted the film waiting for superman. focusing a lot on teachers and the
