s, early voter registration. all of those are caught up and shaped very much by the political and partisan struggles that exist in this country. instead, we will be focusing on one aspect of that, namely redistricting. i think it is also important because of some of the new initiatives that have been taken on the redistricting process. perhaps the most interesting and visible is the switch to an independent citizens commission in the state of california, which is unfolding as we speak. david wasserman among others has reminded us how little time over there has been in the california u.s. house delegation over the last decade. when we had three truly dramatic electoral swings between the parties. simply, the state of california was insulated from that process. the question becomes, does that game change? now florida passed a couple of initiatives that have tried to impose some discipline on that process. right now, the swing state of florida has 19 republican members of the house and five democrats as i recall. it may be

i think the issue with that has frankly been the feasibility of getting voter approval of that tax. it would be a new tax. i'm sure you know that's come on and off of the books. but for a recent memory, that tax hasn't existed. there are good arguments on policy grounds for that revenue source as opposed to others, and that it would potentially provide a price incentive for people to alter their consumption of resources, but i think it would be truly a hard lift to get that type of a measure passed by the voters. the second response to that in terms of why we went with the sales tax versus the residential u.u.t. or the other options that were out there, we did think that this provided something of a unique opportunity, and i think there are also concerns with the sales tax on policy grounds to a certain extent, brothe in terms of the impact potentially on spending and the impact on to what extent the burden is shared on different income groups within the city. but we did think this was a pretty unique opportunity where you had the rate declining by a percentage point and we could pl

now, the same poll shows that 76% of voters in ohio oppose cutting spending on medicare, 77% of missouri voters, 71% in montana, and 69% of minnesotans feel exactly the same way. i mean, folks, those are a massive majority of purple state voters who are really done with this republican plan of we think it will stymie the economy if we raise taxes on the rich folk. democrats need to hammer the righties with these numbers every day. it works. republicans need -- kind of like shiny objects like maybe a casey anthony trial to distract the american people. the facts are not on their side. but for a guy like the drug sister to claim liberals don't care about the life of a 2-year-old, and the murder of a child is about as low as it gets, but you see, they'll stoop to anything to make their case. democrats have always fought for and wanted social and economic justice for all americans. and, of course, we talk about the income disparity in this country all the time. how can they be good for america? i really want any state representative or any state senator from any state in the union to come up
