yesterday, a vta train derailed when it hit a car that didn't make it across the tracks in time. len ramirez live at the crossing. >> reporter: after interviewing witnesses and looking at surveillance video, police say they've good idea what have happened. the driver drove around the lights and bells and barriers and struck a train which was coming down the tracks. but what is still baffling tonight, is why he did it. light rail passenger service resumed but trains moved cautiously down the tracks at the intersection of lincoln avenue where a driver and passenger were killed by a fast moving train. today police said the preliminary investigation found the bells, lights and crossing arms were working properly when the accident happened. >> the crossing arms were down. and that the driver went around it. and that's when the train collided with the car. >> reporter: surveillance video shows a car stopped at the crossing seconds later's car moving in the opposite direction can be seen driving into the path of the oncoming train and is struck broadside. the two vehicles skid down the

the collision between the light rail, vta train and car happened on lincoln avenue west of downtown. dion, the aftermath is just horrific. the vehicle unrecognizable as it was badly mangled from the collision. it looks like investigators are going to be here for a while. security video caught the collision on camera. it happened at around 12:30 p.m. san jose police say a gold buick was going south on lincoln avenue when it drove across the arms and was struck. the driver of the buick and his male passenger died at the scene. the roughly 20 passengers and operator onboard the train suffered no injuries. customers at the brewery were shaken by what they saw. >> like an extremely loud noise. it lasted a really long time, and we looked out and there was just the debris flying. >> we've got? service impacts. right now we're having a bus bridge between our convention center
