vytas? >> reporter: they do send professionals out to survey it. up in this area we did see that damage right there across these apartment complexes here and the other damage a little further north than that. we could actually see the potential of a tornado that went across this region here that went through thattstorm region and with that being the case, that would be a problem for the folks that sawwthose roofs come off across the region. looking at the potenttal for that damage out there, it looks like the problem would be of they look at this, will it be straight-line winds or tornadic damage? what happens with straight-line winds is you have an updraft in a thunderstorm cell anddthen the down draft. what goes up must come down. you can see a big downburst ahead of that storm system nd can produce 80 myrrh winds and can lift anything in its past. %-it's all in one direction buts with tornadic damage you have debris thrown in all directions. this is something they can look at when surveyo

here is chief meteorologist vytas reid with what all of that means. vytas? >> yeah, sent out these surveyors to look at the damage, to see really what happenedd if it was just straight line tornado touching down.acttal look at the storm data released this fternoon. and evening. there was a confirmation of a down burst of swirling wind. and that terminology is called a bookend vortex. and national weather service confirmed that ef1 tornado with the strength of maximum winds of 80 to 100 miles per hour, and thee also there was straight line wind damage associated with this storm that pushed through. so a lot of factors going in to play. go back in time. looking at when the line of thunderstorms pushed across the area. northern parkway. there is pairrin parkway, line of thunderstorms moves northeast. across the city. strengthening. moving about 70 miles per hour. now, you notice how it is boeing here. bow echo they call it, boeing, because of the strong inflow coming in from behind the storm. you get a big down rush of wind from about a mile high in the upper a

here is vytas reid with a first look at the sky watch forecast. vytas? down good out there. we can see on the maryland satellite radar composite. showers are pushing through the and it looks like we will showers across the region. one thing you now, heavier showers up to tte noothwest over parts of pennsylvania. over parts of southern and central portions of virginia, they have strong storms there. where there is actually tornado watches out. because of the chance for gusty thunderstorms. we have some winds that are going to pick up through the overnight. that will become a factor tomorrow. for the first part we have to deal with the rain as the storm pushes through. how much rain? well, the future scan model prediction right now shows anywhere ffom three quarters of an inch of rain, some areas about half an inch of rain. thhre was areas that could see more to the outh of us. but for the most part, i think, left with that rainfall and then we will have to deal with the rains as this system pushes and it will feel mild through the night and morning hours. then the cooler air

here is vytas reid with a closer look now at what exactly happened last night. vytas? >> jennifer and jeff, we saw the strong line of thundeestorms gather strength through the -estern portion of the city. to the northeastern portion. and travel to harford county. looking at that area. zoom in closer. apartment complex hit with that potential tornado. still trying to determine %-potentially touched down.at went across the areas, in those apartment complexes. or was it actually maybe potentially straight line winds. so we are trying to determine whether it was actually a down burss of wind that could have potentially created some of the damage. you ask yourself, the difference between a respond to straight line winds? basically what it is is that you have an updraft going into the thunderstorms. air is lifting rapidly when it gets into the upper atmosphere it rushes down in a violent burst, called a down burst. head of the storm. and you can get winds in excess of 80 plus miles per hour that can create tornado like damage. when the surveyyrs go out from the national weat
