it was a total disaster. >> the siege at waco. next. >> waco, texas, is a quiet, modest city surrounded by sprawling cattle ranches, located halfway between dallas and austin, it's an unlikely place for a modern day armageddon. >> yes, sir, this is the fbi command post. we have a fire at the compound at mount caramel. the entire compound is going up right now. >> it was an epic debacle in united states law enforcement history. a deadly shootout followed by a 51-day siege that ended with more than 70 people dead in a raging inferno. all caught on live television with the whole world watching. two questions rise from the ashes of this american tragedy. who shot first and who started the fires? >> it began innocently enough. in 1935 a small religious group moved to waco. an off chute of the seventh day adventist church, they eventually called themselves the branch davidians. >> pretty stable leadership for a lot of years, and they were known in town as a somewhat bizarre but benign religious group that pretty much kept to themselves.

on that day, waco occurs in 1993.r, mcveigh blows up his truck bomb in front of the murrah building. >> at some point, fortier decides to not take part in the bombing. in fact, in a later plea bargain, he will agree to testify against co-conspirators. in march 1995 mcveigh creates a fake driver's license with the name robert d. kling and birth date of april 19th, 1972. on april 14th, mcveigh buys the yellow 1977 mercury marquis from a used car dealer in junction city, kansas. the next day, mcveigh reserves the ryder truck from elliots body shop using the robert d. kling alias. on april 16th, mcveigh and nichols drive the mercury to oklahoma city. mcveigh parks several blocks away from the murrah building. he removes the license plates from the car and leaves a note. not abandoned. please do not tow. will move by april 23rd. needs battery and table. two days later, mcveigh and nichols rendezvous near junction city where they assemble the bomb in the truck. >> the ammonium nitrate and fuel would have been mixed in some
