this isn't a house of -- waikiki beach in hawaii. it was a three story house with an outside elevator, which is one of the reasons roosevelt staff thought this would be an appropriate place to meet. this is in the dining room. you can see it well, but the map is prompt on to dining room chairs. there was a big argument going on between the navy and the army, personified here by the fellow with the pointer and the guy closest to us, on the left side of the frame, douglas mccarthy, who didn't like this photograph because if you widen a doubt, you can see his bald spot. and then, roosevelt, obviously, in between them, and next to him is admiral leahy, his chief of staff, it was senior to both of these military commanders. so the argument here is, i'm gonna go to luzon and reclaim manila and live up to our pledge? i shall return? or should we skip the philippines, go straight to japan? ernie king wanted formosa, mcarthur, of course, felt it was incumbent upon the united states to live up to it's pledge to redeem his promise to return to
