walden. mr. walden: i thank the gentleman who chairs our oversight and investigations subcommittee and is so passionate in not only finding a solution to the opioid epidemic but also your great work on mental health reform as well as was passed into law in the 21st century cures legislation last year. as you know the energy and commerce committee last year or the year before also passed legislation to begin to address this issue, and we will be doing a lot of work going forward to look at what's working on the ground, what's not. addiction, as you well know from your clinical experience, is an equal opportunity destroyer. it's a crisis that doesn't pick parties, it doesn't pick people because of their race, their age, their socioeconomic status. we all know someone impacted by the opioid epidemic. it's literally touched every corner of our country and every community in our states. the epidemic has hit home in oregon where people die more in drug overdoses than automobile accidents. i met with co

address this crisis, he's going to talk quite a bit about that and last but not least, german ed walden is with us. chairman of oregon. he has brought attention to the opioid epidemic that affected his district in rural and eastern oregon. he is also plays a key role in overseeing the health sector of our economy. he played a key role in drafting the american healthcare act which is now going through the congressional process and we are going to give you an opportunity to talk about that legislation and the oversight that you've done on your committee, thank you very much for being here. let me start with center markey. this is a question i'm going to throw to everybody on a panel today. but tell me how you first experience this crisis as a crisis, when did you understand that this is something that needed your attention and what did you see in your state that compelled you to act? >> it was massachusetts, it was martinluther king day . january 15, 2014, i was standing in the back of the room and ready to give my speech and i said to the police chief and the mayor, they are holy and tau

care act democrats plan on single-payer and i think we reported senator o'connell congressman greg waldenvent so we have heard single-payer talk but the politics were never really that favorable towards it during a democratic administration i think it's a fair assumption that it's not that favorable towards the republicans. >> guest: it actually doesn't seem like it's on the horizon in d.c. but a lot of states are looking at the possibility of some kind of state-level increase public health insurance program. some of that is reaction from own t d.c.. the california senate has passed a new payer bill and there's one in new york and a proposal in nevada that would let anybody buy into the medicaid program. it was theater by governor sandoval friday but passed both houses of the legislature and it's one that a lot of other states seem to be interested in at this point. it is interesting to watch and remember how the affordable care act started in massachusetts with the state-level version of the affordable care act that passed senator and governor romney and that became the model for the nat

walden. >> i want to thank our witness fours your testimony. we appreciate what you do in our states and communities communit. mr. holmes in your testimony you say that men of your patients travel over 50 miles, often over secondary roads to access care in your health center and often you're the only provider. in addition to isolation and distance what other challenges we should know not care and delivery that are unique to rural areas and the district would step from the atlantic ocean to ohio, and so it's bigger than nearly every state east of me miss is river so i'm used to pretty remote rural, extreme remote, whatever the furthest out remote nomenclature. >> delivery of care in the service area that's almost the size of new jersey is challenging because we're in small communities. two of our health center sites attached to critical access hospitals and those hospitals are small, 14 beds and 16 beds, attached long-term care units. we have to be able to recruit providers to see these patients. we're in a frontier area, and it's long distances

to conversation with greg walden, who chairs the house, and commerce committee, he sat down with lauren duggan to talk about efforts to repeal and replace the affordable care act and legislative priorities for house republicans. this is 50 minutes. telecom, technology, all of i would like to start with the biggest issue, which is health care. we know your senate colleagues on a bill maybe behind closed doors, circulating language, where do you assess the status of this? greg: in the first few months of the year, when we had this task before us, we got a lot of public suggestions from some of our colleagues across the aisle about what we should or shouldn't do. after we passed the bill and sent it over to the senate that's been kind of radio silence thereafter. they got a tough job. i respect that. i know they're serious about their work. i know lamarr alexander is a terrific legislator. if anyone can help pull this together it's him and orrin hatch and the others that are involved. it's hard. it's hard doing major reform of entitlement programs, something involving insurance at any leve
