i'm justine waldman. there's a growing force of firefighters that are moving in to los angeles today as more powerful winds are expected to trigger. >> a new dangers that could be setting back the recent containment progress. at least 24 people been killed and thousands of homes and businesses have been destroyed. crews and equipment from canada, mexico and all across the u.s. arriving now to assist the first responders ahead of what could be a few dangerous days there in southern california. we'll take a look now at the latest numbers on the 3 active wildfires that have been burning in los angeles county since last tuesday. the palisades fire is 14% contained and has burned more than 23,000 acres. the eaton fire is 33% contained and has burned more than 14,000 acres. the hurst fire is 95% contained. it has burned nearly 800 acres. and today officials warned about criminal activity and public interference during the efforts to contain the flames and rescue people. >> overnight we had several other arrest.

i'm justine waldman. there's another fire burning in lost it. >> fire starting near lake castaic. it's being called the hughes fire. it's already burned about 500 acres. it started just before 11 o'clock 'pthis morning. so it's burning for about one hour now. there are evacuation orders and warnings in place in the nearby areas. and we can see from this video, the flames that are burning through this very dry and rugged area. so as we take a live look here at our camera from ktla, that's over. the scene will be able to see what's happening. >> right now as this fire, as i said, has burned 500 acres. i don't see anything at the moment from cal fire nearby agencies about any containment. but these are live pictures now. so we can see exactly what's burning and how much smoke is in the air. again, our station in los angeles, ktla is saying that burning near the 5 freeway and that areas impacted right now by heavy smoke coming to see this helicopter hovering above. i can't help the moment. if it's doing any water drops. we will keep our eye on here just for a second as it goes through

i'm justine waldman. >> we begin with a story out of the east bay where oakland firefighters are speaking against the temporary closure. a fire stations kron 4 charles clifford is live for us now in oakland with details. charles, which stations are closing? >> well, there are 2 stations, including station 25, which is right behind me here that are being closed down. and today a firefighters are expressing their frustration saying that these closures endanger public safety. monday morning, oakland firefighters gathered on the steps of city hall to demand that the city reopened. the recently closed fire stations show that the city's budget prioritizes the lives of citizens of this great city. oakland is facing a budget deficit of around 129 million dollars. the city was counting on the sale of the oakland coliseum site to fill that budget gap. >> but the deal has yet to go through as a result. the city is making significant cuts to services the police department and fire department are by far oakland's largest expenses and in an effort to save money, fire stations. 25 28 will be temporarily

thank you for joining us here on kron for to i'm justine waldman. a federal grand jury has indicted the former mayor of oakland sheng thao. this is according to the san francisco chronicle and it's coming after the fbi raid on taos, oakland home last year. and since that rate, how has repeatedly said in interviews, including with us here on kron 4, that she is innocent and that she was not the target of an investigation. kron 4 has reached out to the fbi, the former mayor herself and her lawyers for comment. the fbi would not confirm or deny the report were hit. waiting to hear back from the mayor and her representatives. now of note here, the u.s. attorney's office and federal officials are holding a news conference tomorrow to announce what they're calling significant law enforcement action. so stay with us here on kron 4 as we work to get more details about the indictment, the former mayor of oakland. staying in the east bay. and while there are no suspects and limited leads in the shooting of a four-year-old girl, that child is still in the hosp

cnn's lee waldman in the middle of the devastation. thank you so much for for walking us through that. be safe. all right. check out this video that was taken by a cnn team of a plane descending into lax. as you can see, the view completely obstructed by that smoke that's rising from the scene there. from the from where the wildfires are, that smoke could be potentially dangerous. you saw our only woman wearing that protective equipment to keep herself and her team safe. and although ucla health is treating patients for fire related injuries, the fires could be causing even more potential harm. a recent study out of stanford university claiming that wildfires like these can release cancer causing chemicals into the soil. though there is no evidence to suggest that that is the case with these fires that are still raging in california. let's talk to an expert, though. joining me now is anne rimoin. she is a professor of epidemiology at the ucla fielding school of public health. i should say, professor, thank you so much for offering your

. >> cnn's leigh waldman live on the scene for us this morning. leigh, can you tell us what you're seeing there this morning? >> casey, good to be with you this morning. it seems all is normal here on bourbon street. we're seeing the street completely open now to vehicle traffic. yesterday, they opened it back up to pedestrian traffic. but we're starting to see within the last hour, vehicles starting to drive up and down bourbon street. but what has taken our breath away this morning is a growing memorial to the 14 lives that were taken here in the very early hours of new year's day. i'm going to move out of the way so you can see that for yourself this morning. you can see it's off to the side next to these temporary barricades that have been put into place on the sidewalk. it's candles and crosses that have been left here for those 14 people that were killed in this vehicle ramming attack, and they're right beside these yellow barricades that were dropped off yesterday afternoon by law enforcement. these are next to that mechanical barricade tha

and our correspondent leigh waldman joins me now. and leigh, you know, watching some of this, the winds just impede their ability to fight the fire, not just because of the fact that they can switch direction so quickly, but those super scoopers that they were calling them along the water, they can't scoop up the water with the winds and the turbulence to fight the fires during those winds. and we are expected to see those. i know we can feel a little bit of it now, but to really pick up. >> yeah, we're expecting those winds to come back tonight and into tomorrow, but especially next week, tuesday, wednesday. >> those winds are really going to pick up. that's why it's so important that they get those containment numbers up today when the winds aren't as significant. right now. that's why that the aircrafts that they're flying are so vital to the the efforts to try and get these fires under control. we spoke to people who call this area home. and last night with those new evacuation orders came down as the fire was raging and we could

cnn reporter lee waldman is there. lee, give us a sense of what you've seen today. >> jake, we've made our way now into one of the neighborhoods here in pacific palisades. >> we know people were forced to flee their homes. >> and you can see exactly why for yourself. homes left in rubble thanks to this fire that roared through here, leaving devastation in its wake. >> we can't tell what this home used to be. we can see the remains of a vehicle here, only making out the torched logo of bmw here. but even a puddle of aluminum from what used to be a wheel next to this vehicle. all throughout this neighborhood, we're seeing lines from utilities scattered along sidewalks, even scattering the roadways. here. it's been a flurry of activity all throughout the day as fire crews and utility crews are coming through this neighborhood. i believe we have another camera angle we can show you to show you just the widespread devastation throughout this neighborhood. here, it's the palisades fire at this point is 8% contained, which is

we will thank lee waldman there. appreciate that. i want to turn now for more on the the outlook of the fighting, the fires in the crucial days ahead. i want to talk to brent pascua, who is a battalion chief with cal fire, and he joins us now from los angeles. thanks so much for for making the time and clearly a very busy time for you here. so let's start with what i imagine is the biggest concern, the winds. what is the latest there and what are the fears. >> yeah, the fears are we're going to get really strong winds again and it has the potential to blow fire over our fire lines that we've already created. we have crews working 24 over seven all night to improve these fire lines that we're putting in. we're going direct on the fire itself. and today was a very productive day. we used all our aircraft, our air tankers, our helicopters, in conjunction with our hand crews, hose lays. it was a very productive day here on the fire, but it must be frustrating to think that you've done all this work, establishing these fire lines and the

and for the latest in all of this, let's go to cnn's lee waldman, who is joining us now from pacificisades. lee. of course, that community simply devastated by the palisades fire that just ripped through there so quickly and caused such devastation. what can you tell us? >> jessica? i think the help that's coming from mexico is so well needed. there's already 14,000 troops on the ground here trying to fight this fire. and you can see what this fire has done to this community. house after house, completely destroyed. on the occasion, we see some houses that look like they've been untouched. but house after house left in piles of rubble and ash. here we've heard planes flying overhead as the wind gusts haven't picked up yet today. but they're flying overhead, flying towards the smoke off in the distance with those water drops and with the retardant drops to try and get this fire under control before the wind gusts come back again. now, the the crews from mexico coming in. there's also crews being sent from texas sent from canada. all that help is so desperately needed to try and get th

i'm justine waldman. a federal grand jury has indicted the former mayor of oakland sheng thao. this is according to the san francisco chronicle. and this is coming after the fbi had a raid on taos, oakland home last year. here's video from then. and since this raid, tal has repeatedly said in interviews, including with us here on kron 4, that she is innocent and that she was not the target of an investigation. kron 4 has reached out to the fbi, the former mayor and her lawyers for comment. the fbi would not confirm or deny the report. we have not yet heard from the former mayor of note here, the u.s. attorney's office and federal officials are holding a news conference tomorrow to announce what they're calling, quote, significant law enforcement action. but they would not go into details as to exactly what they plan to be talking about. so stay with us here on kron for news. as we work to get more details about this announcement and this indictment kron four's. dan kerman is on the story for us this afternoon. and the fbi did serve a search warrant to a san leandro city council
