and we're not looking to hurt walmart, we're looking to help walmart because they're a core holding ofension fund. what we're looking for here is transparency. obviously walmart had a problem in mexico. and when it was brought up to the board level, it was covered up, and when shareholders asked for information regarding what happened at the board level, which they are statutorily entitled to, the board said we're not giving it to you and turned over a bunch of blank documents, so we want to know the truth. >> how does this help the story, isn't it about the fact that the unions are upset that walmart won't unionize? >> no, walmart hires ibbw indiana workers. that's not the dispute. i understand there is a dispute with the movement -- >> emily, what do you think? >> this is something but vultures. the unions are being vultures in this situation. the public unions in california and new york wanted to get in on this case and they were told they couldn't. >> you have to admit this is a pretty serious charge. there are documents that seem to support this that have surfaced since that new y

there are a lot of walmarts in that area. worry for walmart. worry for a number of the other retailers in the economy overall. >> i'm not sure why we're talking about the holiday season anyway. we've got a week and a half left in the summer. why does walmart's move make you optimistic about the holiday retail season? >> i think what they're doing is trying to capture a little bit more wallet share early. the way any retail promotion works, if it works one year, which it did last year in 2011 bringing out layaway, which they brought back after a hiatus after a period of time, usually you see it's effective. you either make the time period longer, you start it earlier or you deepen the discount. they did two of the three. brought it up earlier and eliminated the fee. that's all -- that's all just good news. i think that really what this is about is just bringing walmart back to the core values of what it's about. it's about edlp. everyday low prices. it's about helping people get their paychecks further. that's really to me all that this speaks t

why now from walmart? >> as for the timing, i don't have an answer for that, but it's something they've been doing for a long time, i think it's more reactive as you see the competitive landscape as they cross ever more. i also think it's in reaction to the dollar stores. if you look at what they have been doing, their comp sales have outpaced walmart, and when gas prices go up, you can go to a dollar store and don't have to drive out to a super center. >> you say this is ina inspired move by walmart. is are they doing everything they can? >> yes, one of their guys came from super value. he knows how quickly sales can fall off, and with target, costco, cvs, and all other key competitor, they have fewer fuel stations, there's cause for concern, that said, walmart is trying hard to lower prices. >> you have been a supporter, what would it take to make the stock more attractive to you? >> first and for most, i like to see the sales gab close with their main competitors for lower income consumers, and second,

walmart beat the estimates nicely, guided higher. exactly what you would expect from the biggest retailer in the world, and that's what went wrong in a nutshell. walmart did precisely what it was supposed to do. didn't blow away the numbers. didn't issue a monster guide up that knocked your socks off. given that walmart rallied 20% for the year and has been the hottest major stock in retail, it had to do a heck of a lot more than exactly what it was supposed to do. in other words, the, quote, better than expected numbers were precisely what everyone was expecting. in that sense it was extremely disappointing to the walmart bulls. hence the extremely disappointing performance of its stock. cisco, on the other hand, which i'll have more to say about later in the show, delivered pretty much the same kind of positive results and commentary that walmart did, yet it vaulted $1.67 or 9.6%. how can that be? pretty easy. >> that was easy. >> we're used to cisco merely doing the number and then giving us disappointing guidance. often really di

i've watched walmart go through some changes and, quite frankly, walmart kind of cleaned up their assortment and kind of went off their everyday low price strategy, which is very unique. only a few people can do that. and they changed it and they went through, i think, nine quarters of declining sales. not to the level that they're going through here. but they now have got that turned around. how did they get i'd turned around? they got it turned around by getting their prices more competitive every day and increasing their assortment. not decreasing assortment. in ron's case, at least what i read in the paper, from 4 or 500 resources down to 100. that's not a department store. you know, each resource brings customers into the store. and when you decrease the resources, fewer and fewer customers will come into that store. now, walmart is an example of, they have worked very hard to get their prices down, as has target. these stores are getting customers into the store. that same depressed category, which is the middle income and lower. so, you know, i just -- i just think that can't look at
