walmart out there with over 4,000 locations. not that walmart and lumber liquidators compete in the same niche, but the penetration of lumber liquidators is just getting started, maybe around 5% here in the u.s. their margins are expanding for the same reason that walmart and home depot and best buy and 99 cent tree stores expanded economies of scale as they spread their overhead over a larger distribution base and build centers. cut to the operating margin issue. the key part of the short story here is that somehow lumber liquidators cheated their operating margins from 6 to 10% over the last few years. really did not make any sense if you look at comps. home depot in five years saw the operating margins double from 6 to 12%. walmart in eight years went from 4 to 6%. 99 cent stores margins quadrupled from 2 to 8% in two years and best buy's margins 1.5 to 4% over a four-year period peaking at 5.5% a few years ago. the idea that 10% of the sales with chinese laminate led to this market expansion is preposterous. >> you told me t

walmart and some other companies are announcing they're raising wages. that's going to have to be followed. i think we're also misunderstanding the relationship between productivity and wages. we have a simple relationship. rages equals price times marginal productivity. but the reality in the real world is that over the last welcome deck nadade now, workers have found if they don't work harder they don't get higher wages. they don't work harder. that's part of the reason productivity has been so weak. it's not because we're hurrying people into lower paying lower productivity positions. you look at where the jobs are. they're across the board. it's the fact that there is no incentive to work harder and create greater productivity because about the wage gains don't follow. that's what's being missed bid this analysis. >> bob, talk to me about the dollar and the strength of the dollar. some say that's a de facto tightening and. kind of frees the fed up to wait longer if they want to wait. at the same time it is not just the strength of the dollar but the

this follows the footsteps of walmart. there was worry that target is standing up to a $10 million -- over that data breach. in just more than an hour, one of america's most beloved stocks will officially join the dow. scarlet fu joins us now to break down the numbers and unveil what apple's addition to the dow is going to mean. scarlet: it starts to look a more like what the real economy does. apple is the heaviest weighted stock in the s&p 500 and was not in the dow jones at all in terms of money, i was surprised because there is not as much money -- very little money benchmark to the dow when you compare it to the s&p 500. directly index money is $33 billion as of the end of 2012. contrast that with the s&p 500 $1.87 trillion benchmark to that index. the s&p small-cap has $31 billion. that's what we are comparing the dow with. according to eric they will probably by $500 million worth of apple shares. that is a drop in the bucket when you consider apple's market cap. betty: starbucks is another company you are watching.
