joining us now to make the case for walmart is greg melich, equity analyst with evercore isi and walmarthis top picks and for target, is gordon, he upgraded target and highlights it as one of his top ideas for the year. good to have you with us. it's not that you don't like walmart, it's just that you like target a little better and if i'm reading my notes right you're seeing a return of 12% in that stock. >> what is it that you like about walmart? >> i like both of them, actually. please take it easy on me if you this in this bullfight. i do like target. target's significantly underperformed over the last 18 months where az walmart is up close to 25%, and costco is up 20% and target trades at 14 times and it's significantly underperformed and when we look ahead we think there will be some mean reversion within the general merchandise category, i think we've started to see some signs of that over the past couple of months from costco who has called out an improvement in the discretionary and walmart improved. the big thing for us is we think the general merchandise category is stabilizin

i think walmart is going to catch a second wave as we get close to the split. >> walmart is going to open at a new high. depot is going in the opposite direction. >> i don't want to dump on depot. >> we don't have to dump on it. the stock is doing what the stock is doing. >> the stock is dumping on itself. i don't have to jump on that bandwagon. >> important earnings reports, but the major earnings report is nvidia. that's wednesday. >> i can't take the pressure. >> a lot of pressure because the stock is up better than 240% over the last year, up 50% or so in just three months. what's riding on that this week? >> well, okay. there's no doubt that nvidia is the most important. this is the stock out of nowhere has come the biggest. >> big enough that you have a big fat folder on it. >> they have a big march conference where they'll lay out the new ai vision as if they don't own the old ai vision. that's the gtc conference. last year they had that $4 billion upset surprise. and then, if you take a look, the stock was flat for the second half of 2023. it turned out to be digestion. i don

international sales for walmart, 17.6% is the jump for walmart sales but again, it is the double beat here that really the board has completely approved, unanimously approved the transaction for vizio. and they say it will be slightly dilutive to earnings per share coming up. but again, this is the big news coming out as far as vizio goes. going back to what we're looking for for walmart, the dividend increase is good news. the forecast and the commentary about the consumer really matters when it comes to walmart. and basically right now they're pushing out the numbers as far as vizio goes. comp sales, if you take you out fuel, looks like that was pretty strong, 4%. but those are kind of the stronger headlines here from walmart. i'm going to dig into more of the consumer forecast which i don't have yet to give you and the panel instant reaction time. maria: i want to know about the e-commerce business. i also want to know about grocery. this has been a real priority for doug mcmillon at walmart. i've got a guggenheim report right in front of me and the analysts there from february 15t

let's start with walmart. i think everybody heard the cfo say that consumers are being choice for in spending -- choiceful in spending, still spending but may be trading down three that seems to be good news for walmart. what is it mean for some of its competitors? stacey: not only are current customers for walmart trading down but they are getting the wealthier customer. larl in grocery it's coming from wealthier people may be over $100,000. perhaps that is taking a little from target. if you buy food at walmart you will probably by other things there as well. but absolutely consumers are very value-oriented still looking for bargains, particularly, as food inflation, while getting better, is still up 20% the past two years. katie: specifically to walmart it seems like in some sense they benefit on the way up and the way down and maybe that is what they are seeing now. stacey: they do. who is better positioned to pass on cost? they dictate, in some aspects, to their vendors, what they will pay. in tougher tim

he went to walmart when it opened and he told me that his clients were finished because walmart carried same quality at a much lower price. so hello that they cannot compete. they cannot compete with someone selling goods for lower than the price my dad's customers were paying to their suppliers. it was game over for the men's store in the department stores that dot our landscape. i thought he was a defeatist, but you know what, he was dead right. and that walmart disrupted everything. just try to find a small ladies where place these days. there are a couple, mostly high and though. about my dad had boxes upon boxes of receipts from customers that folded up and disappeared overnight. walmart had a field to itself until any company can along without a physical presence, amazon. as it got bigger destroyed everyone else that was left except the biggest most powerful retailers, like walmart. walmart did not seem to know what it was doing and learn from it. they hired a computer scientist and developed an app that was not even in the same ballpark and watched as the business slipped. the pr

see walmart? >> i did see walmart. stock is up. >> it's almost half a trillion dollars. very close.ngs report this morning, walmart and home depot. walmart topped estimates, earnings and revenue expectations, it's up almost 4.5%. it says here the guidance was a little bit light. no one's looking at that. it also announced it's buying tv maker vizio for $2.3 billion, that's cash. home depot also beat quarterly estimates. joining us now, sue shadida. the charts look a little bit similar, even though home depot is down today. what happened in the last quarter to both the results, and it seems like walmart, much better and it was down in the 150s, zpst back to 177, which would be an all-time high if we can look at that. >> there are two different stories. when you look at the sub-sectors of walmart, there are categories, like, for instance, health and wellness, which continue to do really, really well. and when you look at some of the subcategories that have been experienced inflation in the last year, non-precipitation drugs, these otc drugs, have grown almost 10% year over year from a

this should give walmart a shot in the arm? >> indeed.t walmart, they have been surprising on the upside for earnings in the last year. if you look at the share price, it is remarkable despite the bad times we have been through as consumers. this has been at all-time highs at the moment. expectations are quite high today, but let's see how they fare. >> it is remarkable. the recent earnings from walmart over the past six quarters. the company has met or exceeded the wall street expectations and it seems we will see another beat. home depot will have a sales drop. michael, given the upcoming election and the uncertainty around it, even if we see gas prices down and if inflation is down, how will the u.s. consumer respond to all that uncertainty also on the geopolitical front? would that show through? >> i think it already is. if you look at what is happening with the consumer space in the last year, they have been pulling back on certain items. if you look at nike and starbucks, they have been showing slowdowns. if you look at walmart wher

we've got home depot and walmart this morning.'s talk about how the fed is probably receiving these reports. as emily graffeo just told us, consumers are still spending, they are just spending less. how does that fit into the soft landing narrative? gargi: i think emily mentioned the term choice full. when i listen to what emily and drew were saying, what comes to mind is consumers being more concerning -- being more discerning. they are spending, they are pleased with how they are feeling and i say that because i took a look at the fed consumer survey that came out last week and again, the results that we are seeing, they become a little more discerning, they are expecting to see inflation continue to normalize which is good news. they are expecting to see that their jobs and their incomes continue to do well but at the same time they are not going to accept higher prices like they did in the course of 2022 and 2023. this is exactly what the fed wants to see. they should be quite pleased. i know emily was talking about that. thes

walmart shocked us all.h my goodness we will enter this spiral and now they're saying maybe not so much. what do you see as they are pricing power and ability to look past some of the weakness we saw the seem to have shifted in the goods sector. >> i think walmart always tries to lead on price. we do pricing studies on a regular basis. so you're always going to get the best value their for whatever it is you are shopping for. i think they will continue to do that. we will see over the next couple of weeks with earnings is 2024 is looking to be year for normalization. the year is starting somewhat soft. as they progress and resort to normalize with inflation and deflation. and then kind of get back to essentials and discretionary. lisa: i ask this at a time when walmart is trying to work more directly with amazon, who is its competitor? is of the targets and home depot's or is it amazon. >> they will tell you there competing with everyone on a daily basis. it's been interesting to see them compete against ama

walmart had great numbers. they talked all about the dynamics around higher ticket charges, whether they have inventory back i look at other parts of the markets. industrials. financials have outperformed the s&p. if you took away nvidia, that's a big take away, this was their week, it's a very interesting market here. i would make an argument that we have gotten some of that broadening. >> the semis despite their fantastic performance, they still have not recouped their losses from the dotcom peak but you still are not able to overcome the losses associated with a dotcom peak to present versus the entire tech sector. >> it's interesting, mike. the other point here as well is a lot of traders look at semiconductor stocks as a leading indicator for tech and by proxy the entire market just how important will this tech trade be specifically with chip stocks to this narrative if there is a bold one going forward? >> so i think actually the point that tim was making is a really important one. you know, people compla
