this happened along jones road between the walnut creek and pleasant hill stations. kpix 5's brian webb reports. >> reporter: ann officially this is a bart police investigation. and it's kind of turned into an eerie scene out here. the crowds have cleared out, the workers who came down here to see things for themselves, they are gone, too. what is left is this empty four- car bart train standing still on the tracks frozen in time and the bodies are still near the tracks about 500 feet to the south of us covered with tarps and there are a few bart officials running between the two scenes. this is what we know from bart management so far. two employees were hit by an out of service train about 2:00 north of the walnut creek station. they were working on a reported dip in the track at the time. by procedure one of them was supposed to inspect the track, the other was supposed to be a lookout for incoming train traffic. both are said to be experienced on the tracks and around the train. the train itself we're told was on a, quote, routine maintenance run with an experien

at ground video but the train was stopped on the track after the accident, bat mile north of the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. nick smith begins our live team coverage now to tell us what ntsb investigators found so far. reporter: you know, ntsb investigators in charge jim fouts finished speaking an hour ago. he says he wants to investigate exactly what happened with that train that killed two b.a.r.t. employees. he says this is no longer being treated as a criminal investigation. this week he and his team will interview everyone on the train at the time of the accident and the operator of the train will be tested for drugs and alcohol, which is standard operating procedure. >> just before 4:00 p.m. the train involved in the accident was moved from the scene and teen a secure location. ntsb investigator in charge says that mechanical inspections will be performed and they are collecting digital records and looking at safety protocols. >> a full inspection of the equipment, men can cal inspection of every operation on the train, inside and out, wheels, brakes, third rail, everything. >>

investigators are in walnut creek. hours into the investigation of how and why two b.a.r.t workers were struck and killed on the tracks. the train that hit them was moved late this afternoon. it is now farther down the tracks so investigators can exam it. we have team coverage, kpix5 don knapp has the latest, don? >> reporter: the ntsb investigators have been on the scene for 4 1/2 hours today. they came off 45 minutes ago. they talked to us and gave us no specifics on what they found. but the investigator in charge did tell us what his impressions were. >> the preliminary walk is on the tracks involved in the area. and, we don't have anything to comment on what we have seen. i will not speculate. we started gathering tkat -- data. we wanted a look at the accident area before we moved the equipment. that is commonly done by us. >> all right. ntsb investigators along with b.a.r.t and cpu representatives walked up on to the tracks to examine the 4-car train sitting where it stopped after yesterday's fatal collision. they
