nick paton walsh is standing by in sochi. let's get the latest from our justice correspondent evan perez on the story in washington. evan, what are you learning? >> wolf, this is a very big alert that just went out to airlines that are flying in to russia. this is not something that they're concerned about being directed here in the u.s., but as you mentioned the olympics getting under way on friday, they're very concerned about airliners that are flying into russia and the concern is about the possibility of explosives being hidden inside toothpaste tubes and cosmetic tubes and about whether or not that could be used to detonate a bomb on board airliners. now, this is obviously something that has been a concern with law enforcement and with airline security experts for some time. as you know, every time we travel, we now have to put our liquids into small containers before we put them on board. but this is a very extraordinary thing to be issuing this very big alert right ahead of the olympics. now, dhs sent us a statement t

our nick patan walsh is in sochi this morning. is considered right now. >> reporter: well, serious enough that barack obama is being updated about it, serious enough that we've had a lot of u.s. officials warning about specifics of this being directed towards flights coming possibly from europe towards russia, specifically directed towards here, sochi, or adler, where the games are being held behind me, specific that it's about toothpaste and cosmetics perhaps being used to either smuggle explosives to this venue, or perhaps more likely, detonate them on the airline itself. now, this is a problem for russia in its past. in 2004, two planes were blown out of the sky almost simultaneously by two female suicide bombers and speculation was then that they hid explosives in their makeup containers. since then, russia introduced full body scanners at airport and, actually, it was difficult to bring liquids in your carry-on luggage to sochi. a mixed picture, but they've introduced heavy restrictions on that. not even 100 millimeters like

we're going to turn now to cnn's nick paton walsh.pendent square in the middle of the latest clashes. so, nick what did you experience and what's happening there right now? >> reporter: now, john, there is a temporary calm. i should say, every once in a while it's shattered by gunfire that goes down to the left. about half an hour ago, i saw a couple of bodies being taken down there. this has been the main street where the clashes have happened. let me wind back to this morning. those of us in this hotel where i am broadcasting out of, many journalists woken by the sound of what seemed like gunfire nearby. according to some of the protesters i spoke to -- and their stories aren't unanimous, they're sort of scattered and differing -- they said at one point in the morning, police withdrew back, pulled back from their original positions. one protester saying it's because a police sniper fired at protesters, protesters fired back at them. another suggesting a stun grenade went off, causing protesters to move forward, simply a tactic polic

let's go to sochi, russia, with cnn's nick paton walsh for the latest.e've heard so much about the ring of steel, a security blanket around the site of the games there. do you know if the russians are recalculating their security plan now in light of the toothpaste tube threat? >> they certainly say they've done everything they possibly could already to make this games the safest. 37,000 security officials coming here. we've seen helicopters yesterday rotating around the sky, three at a time. three surveillance balloons up in the air as well. and an internet dragnet as well as the literal one on the ground here. they'll surely say this is the most security that they can provide in first place. should point out, though, there's a whiff that they may have known about this threat highlighted today by u.s. officials. liquids have been banned on the flight that i took from moscow to sochi. and there are other flights it seems, too, where these have been banned. there's been a history of explosives on russian aircraft. in 2004 two suicide bombers blew two airc

our senior international correspondent nick paton walsh is in sochi.porter: wolf, the real thing here was right in the middle of the opening ceremony of the sochi winter games here. after all those days of heightened alert and fears about toothpaste bombers, that plane flying from the eastern industrial city of hakib in ukraine to istanbul sent out a hijack signal. that's what caused turkish authorities to react quite so sharply. now, there was a situation on board. clearly a ukrainian national, we're being told, suggested that there was a bomb in the baggage hold. now, it's not clear if there was such a device. it seems like there wasn't or quite why he explained to them he thought he could detonate it. but the command he made to pilots was please divert this plane to sochi. of course, that given the climate we're in would have caused real fear. istanbul is one of two places you can fly directly to sochi to from. there were already concerns there about the poshl for that toothpaste bomb threat. it appears pilots either fooled the man on board making h

>> that was cnn's nick payton walsh. my colleague, phil black, picks up our live coverage from kiev's independent scare square, joins me now by phone. what are you seeing now? >> reporter: strangely subdued in the square. again, thousands of people crying. there have been some speeches on the stage. but it's not arousing. it is a more quiet, thoughtful mood in the square. but it is still tense also. maintaining the barricades around the smaller area they now occupy. still lighting fires just beyond the barricades to try and keep the security forces at a distance. and it is only a short distance away that you do find rows of ukrainian security forces in full riot gear. for the moment, they are standing off, and there is no engagement so far. don. >> so we're hearing the protest verse taken over the national tv and radio building. do you have any details about that? >> reporter: yeah, we believe that's the case. this is from ukrainian police who are telling us this. the theory is they're doing this to occupy -- are occupyi

we want to bring in cnn international correspondent nick paton walsh.w you were there as well. from a security standpoint, nick, was there ever a moment you that felt any concern or unsafe? >> talk to us about that. >> no, this has been fine really in many ways. they've put a dragnet in for a number of days. that was pretty secure. and i think there will be a lot of people in the kremlin extraordinarily relieved actually across russia, because russia keeps a strong hold on its media. as far as we know, this went without incident. there is issue about the plane that flew from eastern ukraine that neighbors rushed to closely to istanbul. let me tell you a little bit about that. that situation now resolved but it happened right in the middle of the opening ceremonies, guys. of course, everybody, suddenly red lights flashing. this is a plane midair flying from ukraine to istanbul to turkey. main on board, ukrainian national, we're not sure what mood he was in at that time. he said to the pilot and crew, there's a bomb on board. divert the plane to sochi. no

cnn's nick paton walsh is live in kiev.ng silence from russian leader vladimir putin. >> reporter: absolutely. we've only heard from his prime minister, dmitry medvedev, not really the main player when it comes to foreign policy decisions in moscow. with putin being at the winter games the last few weeks, just left recently, but we haven't heard a beg, overarching statement on this remarkable crisis for him and his sphere of influence in this part of the world. today in kiev arrived u.s. deputy secretary of state william burns with some officials from the u.s. treasury. they're here to obviously provide political support initially but to talk through the complex, messy task of whether the billions of dollars that ukraine needs right now to keep its economy and government afloat, where does that come from? it was going to come from russia, but they had political demands upon ukraine that led to the protest behind me. now the eu are asked to supply that, but they are being cautious. they want to see the imf involved and set v

our nick paton walsh joins us live from sochi. nick, who are these women?hey really a threat to the games? >> well, they say they are not but they admittedly all have late husbands killed with forces. so they've basically stay in one town. i spoke to six separate women. most of them worried about talking but all have been told by police, don't leave town. therefore going to checkup on you three times a week or so and if you do leave town you'll be on the wanted list immediately and the reason for that is being people concerned they might blow themselves up. they have made it clear that they feel their civil liberties are being violated but russian authorities are doing anything that they can to stop anything that could be perceived as a threat. >> we're hearing reports that the russians are rounding up stray dogs in sochi? >> reporter: that's part of the general clean-up act going on here. we've heard similar reports from animal activists certainly upon the dogs, if any of them are killed. the howling in the background behind me, that gives you an idea of t

let's bring in cnn senior international correspondent nick paton walsh on the phone with us. they're having some issues with the power in sochi right now. nick, the travel alert was issued last month. and then a new alert last night. tell us about this new alert. >> reporter: yes, yesterday by the state department, clearly as a result of more recent concerns they perhaps have. what it originally states is if you come to russia as an american tourist you're within russian jurisdiction and the russian law gives them the right to look at your e-mail, internet traffic or communications and your cellphone traffic as well. so you have to be cautious of that if you're passing information as well. hacking in russia is nothing new. if you remember when the internet first came around, a lot of cyber crime, a lot of hacking originated from russia. things have changed now and the state department is warning more about the issue of government surveillan surveillance. of course, critics of the u.s. would say, the nsa is their own. but talking about here is perhaps being more mindful of wha

i want to go to nick paton walsh in kiev. what do you know about the president's whereabouts? >> reporter: we know he released a video statement calling what happened a cue and saying that laws are being passed to take him out of power. we don't have a guarantee of where he physically is. there are suggestions in the immediate kra that he may have tried to leave the country. that may be possible. i have to say he looks out of the picture now really. there are no signs of security forces here. we drove around a lot today and saw one police car. they seem to have moved back. protesters are now running the streets here. often with some of the sticks and helmets, running their own local militia and parliament is moving full steam ahead to introduce their new series of leaders here. now they have just called for a new election in may for a new president and said that he isn't doing his job and therefore is out of a job. we don't know how legal that is. plus appointing a new series of ministers and saying the speaker will fill the job of the duties of the president until those elect

let's go to nick paton walsh. what's the history of explosives on planes in russia?a long history of it here. back in 2004 before the hostage crisis there were two simultaneous explosions that bombed two separate airliners which took them out of the sky. there were both female suicide bombers behind the blasts and rumors afterward were perhaps they got on board by using face cream tub, large ones. this is before the restrictions of 100 mill liters that now plague most of us with our hand luggage. one other important point, jake, too, is that we're now seeing a complete ban on liquids in hand luggage across russia. the planes we took here wouldn't let you take anything on board, not even 100 milliliters worth, so clearly the russians are concerned about something. they were the first to introduce those full-body scanners you see at airplanes after those 2004 blasts. so definitely concerns here. they've tried to preempt them, but this is borne of a long history of uncertainty. they're probably not using toothpaste tubes to bring explosives here. it's probably something

there to enjoy it all, nick paton walsh. >> we'll be watching. bring in barbara starr at the pentagon. explain to us what this is all about the toothpaste threat. >> it was yesterday the homeland department of security issued the warning about airlines traveling to russia concerns they could be carrying what is within in 24 hours known as toothpaste bombs, containers filled with explosives that might be carried on board airliners. now the question is this, the threat may be fairly specific. they're going to try and do it, they think, in the run-up to the games. but is it credible? so that's where we are right now. the u.s. intelligence community, you know, people hope they're working with the russians and the russians are sharing, looking at everything they can. the latest intelligence. what's out there on intercepts? what's out there on jihadi forms? who's talking to who? what bomb makers may be out there that has the expertise to carry and assemble to carry something like this off. easier said than done. some of these devices are fairly complex
