cnn's nic payton walsh is in donetsk, ukraine where he witnessed shelling earlier today.e talked to you earlier you were healing shelling and seeing orange glows in the background. what's happening right now? >> reporter: no change to the backdrop here. 45 minutes to go until we're supposed to see a cease-fire a peace which will potentially bring an end to one of the most violent confrontations on the doorstep of europe since the balkan wars. a leadup to that i want you to hear the shelling incoming and outgoing sounds of shelling in donetsk it's been happening quite frequently. no let up as all. the fog has slipped in as well. but there's also a great sense of uncertainty about the next 40 plus minutes ahead. in 50 minimums time ukranian president will address the people on television. many think that will be the order he gives the ukranian forces to stop fighting. this is very messy technically. we've spoken to a spokesperson for the separatists who said they've now taken an important part of a town called dubalsova a key to this agreement. they've taken a part of that

we have nick paton walsh life from donetsk. nick. >> reporter: this has left so many more gaping questions here in the ukrainian conflict which is now a year old. a year ago, dozens of protesters in kiev by police snipers. here separatists emboldened because they were forcing a retreat to leave behind weaponry. we are left with the question of how many lost their lives in the operations around that town. an initial number from the ukrainian military but no final count of civilian deaths there. those on the ground joke with kiev but taking a hold on the region. that includes more violence to the north and south of the territory they currently have. finally, what becomes of the peace agreement. this was a truce that never was. we heard shelling in the early days this week. that was destroyed yesterday by heavy shells by both sides. the fighting around debaltseve has never stopped. world leaders call this a cease-fire. there has to be a reckoning of whether minsk ever came into play at all. i think we are looking at ukraine holdin

nick paton walsh is live in ukraine. nick, ukraine's forces struggling to hold their ground there. >> reporter: absolutely. and i think it's remarkable that we can be talking about who holds what when we're supposed to be in the middle of a cease-fire. we started the day with the separatists claiming they hold 80% of that city. that was denied by the ukraine yanls yaens. we're hearing the ukrainians say they have controlled parts. they also accept that some of their troops are captured by the separatists. we've been saying for days that they're actually encircled. the question you have to ask yourself is, who does it belong to. under the minsk accord ss -- listen to vladimir putin who effectively says the ukrainian troops should surrender. here's what he said. >> translator: i expect that the officials in charge in the ukrainian leadership would not prevent the ukrainian troops and servicemen to lay down arms. if they cannot -- if those leaders cannot make such orders by themselves. and i hope they would not persecute pe

our senior international correspondent nick paton walsh joins us to tell us more. >> reporter: carol,out whether or not the next 50 hours will lead to an escalation in violence that makes the cease-fire impossible and forget about whether or not the heavy weapons get drawn back large distances. you have to ask yourselves the fighters on the ground many different factions here unsure command structure, are they going to listen to the diplomats? we went to one front line to the south of donetsk and broke the news a cease-fire had been called to some of the separatist fighters. their reaction pretty negative a lack of trust of the enemy. also a feeling they had to keep on fighting because they didn't want to be part of ukraine again. here is what one of the fighters we spoke to had to say. >> translator: ukrainians won't have a cease-fire. ukraine armed forces i mean. we can resolve this conflict in only one way, ukraine withdraws its armed forces from the territory of the donetsk republic. that's the only possible way. >> reporter: now, obviously that's one soldier, but a number of thos

our nick paton walsh is in debaltseve where ukrainian troops just withdrew. amazing reporting, nick, the past couple days as you watch the cease-fire basically crumble. what are you seeing now? >> reporter: we are inside debaltseve now as i stand. around me is devastation. a lot of ukrainian armor left behind. one ukrainian soldier showing lots of destroyed houses. i was in the down two weeks ago and it looks remarkably different. although it was still already bombardment. the destruction is remarkable before you head to the center of town. the victory for the separatists, is withdraw the ukrainians call it is planned and remarkable turn of events in ukraine. what we don't know is the full scale of the death toll in the battle. it occurred mostly during the cease-fire. it may well have been the bloodiest periods. judging by the destruction, there must have been lots of lives destroyed here. we saw one woman here walking out with a wheelbarrow, traumatized. the sound of constant shelling. it is hard to describe the look on her face and horrified how she must h

cnn's nick paton walsh is live for us.ave been so many reports of violations on the ground nick. >> reporter: it's a huge disparity with the diplomacy that happens in foreign capitals and what is happening here. the town which both sides want to railway, there are hundreds of thousands of ukrainian troops trapped inside and evenn circled by the separatists. there seems to be mines and other issues blocking the road. that access to everywhere is part of the cease-fire deal and they cannot go down to assess what is happening in there to see who is shelling who. that is an issue derailing the cease-fire. we could hear intense shelling going on around the area. no sign that stopped today or the monitors can get near that town. then the diplomacy. this morning's statement from the russian and french and german and ukrainian presidents they thought the monitors should do their job. they agreed that in minsk. the fact they have to reiterate that now shows how far they are slipping. the withdraw of the frontline is part of the agr

our senior correspondent, nick paton walsh, reports on the many challenges ahead. >> reporter: so many moving pieces ahead of the cease-fire literally hours away. the first being the tactical issues on the ground. will both sides stop shelling each other? where i'm standing sze intermittently heard shelling. both sides. the strategic hub. the raw emotion of fighters on both sides furious at civilian casualties. we saw one particularly tragic horrific incident that shook one family in separatist-held areas last the night. it was here thursday night when this family got their first running water for a week and quickly made the kids' bath. the 2 and a half-year-old, age 14, another 7, their godmother explains. then the first shell hit. direct here on the bath itself. all three were killed. their parents were both in the front bedroom whose windows didn't even shatter. this civilian area is still being shelled here 34 hours before a cease-fire. >> get down! >> reporter: the family is now a shell. numb in mourning. the tiny coffins ready for tomorrow. >> translator: i went to get a towel in

let's bring in nick payton walsh, live in donetsk, ukraine. let's start with the anniversary of the maidan demonstrations. were you there last year. >> reporter: after seeing a year ago those scenes unfold in central kiev where a decade ago a government had been ousted in similar protest peacefully to see it collapse into snipers shooting at times unarmed men dead in the streets around us it seemed that ukraine was embarking on a terrifying new episode in its history then and i think even those who thought worse was coming could never imagine we'd be standing in donetsk now in the middle of a civil war. the noise you hear behind me is a remarkable small, but noisy children's festival. but just hours earlier, part of this city have been hit by shelling. you referred to a cease-fire. i have to say it is that in name but we've soon very little sign of an actual cessation of fire by either side since it was signed over a week ago now. it was midnight last week last early sunday that the guns were supposed to fall silent. we heard dramatic silence

nick payton walsh is out front. >> we're at international airport. ukraine's army is still shelling here. despite being pushed out of this former strong hold two weeks ago by russian-backed separatists, themselves heavily armed. this is their form of airport shuffle. we're moved in an armored car towards a new terminal of the airport. separatists have taken this territory. it's still regularly under fire from the ukrainian military. we pull into the airport long term underground parking. occasionally shells are still landing here. >> the fight killed hundreds as ukrainians used service tunnels to hold part of the complex. the men claim these bodies were left in the ukrainian retreat. last call for passengers on this walkway passed months ago. these pictures from three years ago showing how it used to sparkle. hard to imagine how just six months ago we were here flying out of the the state of the art international terminal. look at the destruction and how this symbolizes how far eastern ukraine has fallen. >> morters often fall here so we move fast. t

nick paton walsh is joining us live right now. nick from what you have seen there, have there been any violations of the cease-fire? how is it holding up? >> reporter: well certainly we've come down from the key town which is at the heart of the disagreements around the cease-fire and there was a lot of shelling begging the question, what do you really cause the cease-fire when people haven't stopped firing. that of course is what people are dealing with right now. there were shelling on both sides and civilians are cowering in basements, simply terrified to leave there. and, of course the other issue as well being how to resolve the hundreds and thousands of ukrainian troops trapped inside that particular town. we spoke to some ukrainian tank troops who had just come out and they said trying to go back in there, in their words, was a one-way ticket to their grave. very far from a cease-fire. the monitors say it's holding apart from the bouts. the bouts are always going to be the key town that both sides want to sad bee that would
