in fact, when i first was an amputee i came to walter reed and also the v.a.ospital here in the capital region and had outstanding care. in my experience i've always been treated with dignity and respect, at the three v.a. hospitals i've been fortunate enough to work with. finding a local process is pretty typical. i understand this has decreased in the past few years as the v.a. has invested their internal capacity to their internal capacity to fit and fabricate limb prosthesis. i developed a close working relationship with my local prosthetic doctor over the years and would like to continue to see him. the v.a. recognizes and requires agencies. my local office in town is seven minutes from my house and he has signed a v.a. contract to provide that care and so -- the ongoing care i receive at my contract's was high quality and very convenient. created little disruption from my current job, my family and my lifestyle. while i developed a new prosthetic that's coming out, i began to be interested in this new technology, and the v.a. hospital in denver, when i w

we've come a long way since the issues of walter reed, army medical center, were identified in 2007. at that time, v.a. and the d.o.d. were mimes apart. simply stated, the lack of integration and cooperation between the departments did not serve wounded service members well. since that time, together we have committed to achieve a seamless transition through a multi-prong aid proech with ides as one of the critical initiatives. the joint ides process was designed to eliminate time consuming and often confusing elements of the separate disability processes. the goals of the joint process, increase transparency, reduce processing time, improve consistent sip and reduce the benefits gap. to achieve greater transparency for service members we enhanced our online tools. the my healthy vet and e benefits to allow service members at ides to view appointments and lab results and to track their claim. internally we've increased transparency to the ides track board that tracks performance at each ides site. the secretaries have charged us to reach a combined performance going of 295 days for 6

we recently met with them at walter reed national medical center and we found out some of the things that they need is for long-term care we've been sending some of the spouses out for like a spa weekend or just to get away because the caregivers are getting just fatigued. so we found that we're just -- that's the least we can do and we're trying to figure out what else we can do for the caregivers. we've also found out, and we just started a program where we're working with the select number of folks so we can get our guys who are severely burnt or having spinal cord injuries, we can get them the sleep number beds because we found out they need hardened mattresses to get into the bed and to get out of the bed but while they're sleeping they may need to be very soft. on the other side of the bed is the spouse who may not want to have that hard bed or soft bed. so no one was sleeping. so now we've gotten a lot of feedback, getting the beds they need. a simple thing, very simple, but making sure they get what they need. so we are very proud to work with our special operations community
