army medical center to what's now known as the walter reed national medical center at bethesda. pretty challenging the cultures that exist there, you have cultures that exist here, you are speaking about cultural differences between the military and its hierarchy of command and control and the civilian command and control and figuring out the two greatest things you need in the chaos of disaster. no. 1, communications. no. 2, who's in charge. i dealt with a lot of cultural issues when i was combining the army and the navy medical forces between walter reed and bethesda. america's army is an amazingly heroic army. they have occupied valley forge , tokyo, berlin, danang and now it occupies bethesda, maryland, but we're working through that. how do we break those cultural barriers, how do we figure out supporting supporters, how do we do that before the next capacity goes on? so what have we done, what capabilities do we bring, where do we use them and how will they be playing a role here in the event of the most likely nightmare scenarios for this area? i grew up in the bay area,

would not have been able to make it happen without my .olleagues at fox [applause] after being at walter reedeting with wounded words, he came to our office and he and conan o'brien spent an hour talking with the students. that is all they did for an hour. they talked to the students. [applause] the students were a little freaked out, but it was cool. [laughter] scott wilson at "the washington post," a big supporter of the scholarship fund and the internship program. we appreciate all of these folks out here. leaders at the of the tv networks also stepped in without hesitation. as one really got me. i went to jeff zucker from a cnn, and he immediately -- i said, would you offer and enter ship to one of our scholars and emilio he said, done. and i thought, -- and emea leahy said, done. and i thought, -- and immediately, he said, done. and i ought, this is the first time that anybody is glad to hear him say done. they have all been contribute to our scholarship funds. we thank you. this is the one that really got me. every year, we give the comedian at this dinner $10,000, which is a small chan

didn't he just couldn't get the words out so they took him and he went to germany and they went to walter reed and i guess he had a shorter stay than he should have had and they sent him home. and so he learned how to be a paraplegic it took him four years his first year of recovery was documented in the film documentary filled out he documentary body of war and so that covered his first year recovery in kansas city and so it was very difficult to learn how to dress himself and take care of himself and feed himself and. during that time they toured with the movie. around at film festivals around the country in film screenings and he was speaking at the time so he. was able to do quite well as a carer. up until two thousand and eight and then. he was on all he presented with pain in his arm and then he went to the hospital again committed in a blood thinner and i guess it's customary that they take people off of this forty weeks later which they did shortly thereafter he had a massive pulmonary embolism so that it was like an anoxic brain injury so he had lack of oxygen for a period of time. an

and, you know, i remember when i was in there, in walter reed, there were amputees there and they weree time, she's going to go through her own healing process and there will be times that no matter what we can tell her, until she experiences it herself, you know, she's going to have self-doubt at some point. but seeing what other people can do and seeing what we do with our lives, as amputees, it will give her that hope and when she gets down, she'll be able to lean on that and go, but if they can do it, eventually i'll do and she will. >> it is a unique story to think that mom and daughter are healing, next to each other, i'm close to my mom. that would help me so much. how are they doing? >> they're awesome. we were just -- i was joking with them yesterday, is she still going to be in the hospital? she's not going anywhere. so i think even if the daughter was able to go home, i don't think her mom would let her go. >> she's in good spirits. there were a group of marines amputees that went and visited her the other day. she was joking about how she wanted to run the boston marathon a

he was at walter reed hospital at bethesda. his father called me four months ago and said i really would appreciate you see my son. he's lost a leg. he's lost fingers. he's badly burned. mr. speaker, it was humbling to go to walter reed yesterday to see this young corporal. but he is what makes america great. his attitude is excellent, not complaining about his injuries. and i just pray to god that we will realize that if we don't stop spending the money we don't have, that young men and women like the corporal in the years to come will not get benefits because we will be financially broke. that will be a sin and i hope it never happens. mr. speaker, i will be back next week. i will have the inspector general's estimate on the cost to stay in iraq for two more years, and i hope to have some figures i can leave and put in the record, because it is time that we have a debate on our foreign policy right here in the house of representatives. maybe we will in may. i hope so. with that, mr. speaker, as i always do i ask god to please

major hasan should have never been transferred from walter reed to fort hood.shouting and if there is anybody at guantanamo bay it should be major hassan. we're going on four years and he has not been brought to trial. the ips dept was declared work faist violence. the official d.o.d. and the department of the army report, this is heinous. you know about the fact that the 13 seasonals and the apartment of army civilians killed and the other 30 wounded are not allowed to get purple hearts because we believe it would effect his trial. >> tucker: the obama administration said women will serve in infantry and combat units. they have had physical standards in training. do you think the standards will become the same? or fighting different wars? >> i believe that you heard the chairman of the joint chief of staff talking about how they justify the standards if the females are not able to pass the test. we see that happening already. with marine corps infan tri office and basic. it's the same, the liberal progressive, social utalitarinasm crept in the administration.

i've had the opportunity in the not too distant past to visit the amazing research facility at walter reed which is looking at a lot of these cutting edge strategies in terms of rehabilitating the wounded four years, and i think the research going on, again, trying to identify exactly what happens when an ied blows up and what post-traumatic stress syndrome is actually causing to happen in the brain and how that can be dealt with in the future. that has, you know, a clear impact on hundreds of thousands of soldiers who are returning and trying to resume a normal life. so the faster we can accelerate this, -- i mean, we know how to treat their limb injuries and we know what has to happen if the need to be stitched up. we don't know nearly enough about what has happened to their brain and nervous system, and i think the faster we can get to this research the more help we can give. >> thank you, madame secretary and mr. chairman. >> mr. griffin is recognized. >> thank you, madame secretary, for being here. appreciate your service and answering questions today. i believe and health care reform
