they don't have the resources to provide adequate public safety, according to governor walz. obviously, minneapolis was already preparing for what could potentially happen following the verdict in the chauvin trial. if you drive around downtown minneapolis, you'll notice much of what you see behind me, barricades and barbed wires. we're outside of the police station in the downtown area. it's about a half mile from the hennepin county courthouse. this is a step to protect some valuable infrastructure that the city sees. keep in mind they don't want to happen what happened here 11 months ago following the killing of george floyd. hundreds of buildings were destroyed. some people are still dealing with that devastation and some business owners haven't been able to reopen because that happened right during the height of the pandemic. they were closed. and then the damage from the protesters came along and just amplified that situation. aside from what you see around the twin cities, schools are returning to distance learning tomorrow in minneapolis. so parents once again struggl

yet but they are setting up for that and also the minnesota governor talking about that, governor walz. your thoughts on where that goes in the positives and negatives about going down that road and obviously senator tim scott from south carolina led a charge that was blocked by democrats in the senate. what do you think about that? >> i think if we continue to follow the political campaigns going on around the country, there was a movement that effectively advocate for defunding the police. so that would be the first starting ground, i would say. but if they are going to talk about police reform, they will talk about ways that law-enforcement can use tools in their arsenal that will not be as lethal and effectively work closer to the community when they go to respond to an incident. so i think they will look at a variety of different tools, but i just hope the reform efforts are not going to focus on defunding the police. >> bret: accountability is being talked about a lot, justice being done. this is one case has we just mentioned with jonathan and andy. there will be more to come. i

we're also learning as governor walz said earlier today, they're going to deploy the largest police presence in minnesota history tonight. and arrest any people that want to cause destruction. the curfew will be part of that. he's referencing the curfew. this was just a few hours back. so the largest police presence. certainly looks like a lot of police officers there, officers there, mike. we can't help but remember what happened to that police precinct on east lake street last may 31, i believe it was, when it was essentially abandoned and attempted to take it down to the ground by protesters. we're hearing the flash bangs and you're seeing more tear gas in various shots or -- yeah, being disbursed to try to disburse this crowd. what they're doing so far doesn't seem to have a huge effect on disbursing the crowd. doesn't look like that's the case. police officers clearly after what happened almost a year ago now in the aftermath of the george floyd shooting are themselves on edge. this is not an easy position for them to be in. we have a lot of people on the ground that want to spend a lot

when minnesota governor tim walz announced the county prosecutor would not take the lead in the prosecutions related to the killing of george floyd. it was an extremely rare move. it followed a flood of criticism from those who believe the county prosecutor, hennepin county attorney, mike freeman, was part of the broken system. and so, in came minnesota attorney general keith ellison. a civil rights attorney and former congressman who's been in this fight for almost his entire career. now, you didn't often see ellison in the courtroom. you didn't hear from him, either. but, there he was, most days, inside the courtroom. his fingerprints all over the prosecution. from weighing in on jury selection to preparing witnesses. even invite gwen karr, the mother of eric garner, to join the team's daily meetings. knowing the case wasn't a fight just for the floyd family but for all the black families who lost loved ones and never got a day in court. this is what ellison, who called the prosecution a team of all michael jordans, had to say about his pivotal victory. >> i would not call today's verdict
