i'm janelle wang. >> i'm raj mathai. tonight, a national problem with a local angle. a jump in covid cases in san jose is catching the attention of one of the nation's top health leaders, dr. deborah birx. in a private meeting with local and state health leaders dr. birx says the coronavirus task force is tracking rising cases in 12 cities, among those 12 cities san jose. audio of the meeting was obtained by the center for public integrity which is a journalism nonprofit. an hour ago santa clara county responded to dr. birx. county health leaders said even though there's an increase in cases, it's less than most metropolitan cities. santa clara county says, quote, we are concerned about the increase in cases nationally and believe this highlights the need for a coordinated national approach to address this pandemic, something the president has failed to put into effect. we call upon the trump administration to finally implement the national strategy our inflation needs to contain covid-19. >>> a bay area lawmaker wants governor newsom to shut down california. he says

i'm janelle wang. >> i'm garvin thomas. as california continues to struggle with the surge in covid cases, the state is changing tactics when it comes to testing. state health leaders are no longer encouraging everyone who wants a test to get one. instead, they're reverting back to prioritizing testing based on need. the problem isn't the number of tests available, it's the length of time it's taking now to get results. but as nbc bay area's marianne favro shows us, santa clara public health doesn't seem to be following the new recommendations and that's causing some confusion. >> reporter: at this popup testing site in san jose today, more than 800 people showed up to get a covid-19 test. the people you see in line all got here this morning and received a wrist band to come back at a specific time slot. they're luckt bands were all ha by morning. while the people testing here today are expected to find out results in a week or less, the wait is double that in other parts of the county and state, making contact tracing and
