let's go to cnn's selina wang live in tokyo for us, selena, what is the least like on the ground.ght now? >> reporter: yeah, boris, it is oppressive, it is hot, it is humid. and if it weren't for the pandemic, heatstroke would be the biggest health risk to the athletes and we're seeing players struggle especially spanish players, paula bedosa left the court. and novak djokovic called it brutal. experts say potentially when you combine the heat and humidity, these are the worst conditions in olympic history. sweaty, hot and humid. that's the tokyo summer before the pandemic, heatstroke was the biggest health risk for the tokyo games. held during the hottest time of the year in japan. knowing the risk of heatstroke all too well, she passed out during a marathon in japan and almost died. it took over a year and a half to recover and she never returned to a race again. and now a coach, she's researched the dangers of competing in the heat. >> translator: heatstroke can happen to anyone. and it's a very common cause of death. it may be extremely difficult for athletes to give up compet

let's go to tokyo and bring in cnn's selina wang. she is live for us there.warning that something like this would happen. what more are you learning about the athletes that tested positive? >> reporter: boris, we just learned that on the south african soccer team two athletes and one official tested positive for covid. that whole peteam is now in kbooen. they tested positive inside the olympic village. this adds to the growing list of covid-19 cases linked to the tokyo games. now 55 athletes, contractors and officials have tested positive. and boris, it is critical that these case do not spread in the olympic village where thousands of athletes will be staying. i took a recent visit it that olympic village and unlike normal years when it's a place for partying and celebration, this year it is very much an anti-social sanitized bubble. these athletes are asked to dine alone, wear their masks as much as possible. but many of these athletes will be sharing rooms, which is a concern for medical experts. i took a tour of one suite that fits up to eight athletes, f

cnn's selena wang joins me now live from tokyo. there is a lot of debate going into this and back and forth frankly. what finally put tokyo officials over the edge? >> reporter: well, jim, honestly this comes as a huge relief to the public here to experts who for months have been advising the government to host games without any spectators. now earlier they said that up to 10,000 people would be allowed at each olympic venue but now the massive surge of cases in japan has given organizers no choice. they say tokyo dealing with a spike cases reaching the highest level in months as more cases are being driven by the delta variant. this is going to be a major blow for japan and olympic organizers. they have spent more than $15 billion and years preparing for these games. more than a billion dollars alone just to rebuild the national stadium. it is going to be extraordinary to see those stands in tokyo completely empty when these games move forward. but even without any spectators at the games, much of the public here in japan is still

let's bring in celina wang live from tokyo. celina, what's the latest? >> reporter: kim, exactly. we've learned that at least 20 people are missing as a mudslide hit this morning at 10:30 according to nhk. search and rescue is underway and the prefectural government has asked for addition 23458 support. no deaths have been reported yet. they have been searching for hours. and the video there, kim, is absolutely devastating. you can see the mudslide engulfing homes. infrastructure, debris knocking down everything in its path. the residents there are shocked. they are concerned. atami city is 67 miles southwest of tokyo. the area that was hit by the mudslide includes hot springs, shopping streets and residential homes. as of 2 p.m. local time we've learned that more than 2,800 homes have lost power. we know an evacuation order has been issued in a wide area where the area was hardest hit and areas surrounding tokyo, kim. it's shocking to see that video. in one of the frames somebody was running for their lives. i remember a couple of years ago hundreds of people died in flooding and

i'm janelle wang. >> and we go to the story that everyone is talking about today, simone biles withdrawing from the team competition. biles said the pressure in the tokyo games, not an injury, caused her to withdraw. it's not clear if she'll perform thursday in the individual competition where she is champion. but we'll begin with a major reversal. >>> the centers of disease control is recommending everyone go back to wearing masks indoors even if you're vaccinated. it also said that people who are fully vaccinated can still pass the delta variant to others. here in the bay area, some business owners are already reposting masks required signs. the cdc says with cases surging nationwide, even vaccinated people should mask up. it's a recommendation every bay area county made more than a week ago. but solano's commissioner has not followed and calls the message misguided. >> what is causing the surge is all in people's homes, back yards, camping, it is not in the environment where these mask recommendations are going to apply. >> the health commissioner has he will not be returning to a mask

i'm janelle wang. >>> frightening moment in monterey when a plane left the airport and didn't make it very far. >> reporter: that's right. it all happened in a fairly short period of time. the small plane took off shortly before 11:00. it crashed into a home nearby in a gated community in the hills. the craft did extensive damage to the home and sparked a few fires nearby. reports say the owners of the home in the mawn terra development were not in the home from. some of the flame also caused spot fires in the brush. we had two firefighting efforts that were directed to the structure itself, make sure we control that fire and that the brush in the area, any fire in that trees and brush on theland did not spread to other parts of the neighborhood. >> reporter: several local agency, including cal fire responded. it was ultimately limited to about an eighth of an acre. fire officials say the ntsb will visit the scene of the crash to make their investigation. we don't yet know when that will happen. meanwhile, we reached out to the faa about what they're looking into. they say the conditi

cnn's selena wang is with us from tokyo. selena, it is not just covid causing controversy.emonies fired just a day before the games officially begin. tell us about that. >> reporter: victor, exactly. the opening ceremony has just been hit by one scandal after another. the director fired for mocking the holocaust in a comedy act back in the 1990s, and this comes just days after the music composer resigned after interviews surfaced from the 1990s in which he described severe abuse and tore meant of his classmates when he was a student. the organizing committee did not ask the music composer to resign. in fact, he resigned later after social media outrage. months before that, in fact, the previous director stepped down after comments surfaced of him being offensive to a female japanese celebrity. it is just not the great start for a ceremony that is supposed to be a symbol of unity and peace. we know that this opening ceremony is going to be like none other in history. it is going to be stunning to see the 68,000-seat capacity national stadium largely empty, just 950 vips and

we want to bring in cnn's selena wang, who is joining us live from tokyo. selena, just extraordinary pictures and i can imagine the rescue mission has started. >> reporter: exactly, paula. very devastating videos posted on social media. officials say firefighters are conducting their search and rescue mission. at least 20 people are missing after this mudslide swept across atami city in shizuoka prefecture. this is more than 50 miles southwest of tokyo. if you take a look at that video, you can see the destruction of homes. a huge amount of debris. infrastructure being engulfed in this mudslide. shocked people, bystanders, a lot of shock on social media as well. again, evacuation orders have been issued. the search and rescue mission is under way. no deaths have been reported yet. the shizuoka prefectural officials are also asking for support from japan's self-defense forces. and right now, paula, we are in the middle of japan's annual rainy season. it often causes floods and landslides. in fact, in 2018, more than 200 people died from devastating floods. r

cnn's selina wang is in tokyo for us. what can you tell us about this search?ocal officials who say that search and rescue operations will resume in the morning. 150 members of japan's self-defense forces have arrived to search and support the operations. two people confirmed dead. 20 people are still missing. and video of this ka tatro if i is terrifying. you can see the destruction, the mudslide going through, sweeping through destroying everything in its path. homes, cars, infrastructure, debris, crushing everything in its path. you can seen see some people running for their lives and local officials say as many as 300 households impacted by the mudslide and issued an evacuation order for 0,000 households and say more rain is expected and could be more mudslides. right now, fred, residents are shocked and scared and devastated. it is a beautiful seaside resort. it includes shopping areas, hot springs and even a famous shrine. we are in japan's annual rainy season but nothing could have prepared residents for it. >> that is unbelievable to see. >>> all right,

selina wang in tokyo, thanks so much. development, emergency physician and cnn medical analyst dr. leana nguyen. the former baltimore health commission and column must for the washington post. first question to you, this decision in tokyo, is it the right decision? >> yes, i am really relieved that they made this decision because i was getting very worried. i mean, japan has a fairly low vaccination rate, and i was worried about what would happen when you get a lot of people together. even if there is spacing and masking at the venue, i was concerned about the message this would send, and people when they travel from other places tend to gather in restaurants and in other informal setings as well. i think this was exactly the right thing. lots of athletes have been working their entire lives to compete. but without the risk of super spreader events. >> understand. dr. nguyen, stand by because i do have other questions for you. first back here at home in the u.s., 24 states are now seeing at least a 10% uptick in new covid

cnn's selina wang is in tokyo. tell us more about suni lee.at one point? >> reporter: alisyn, she has just faced so much adversity leading up to this moment, pain, tragedy, loss. in the last few years she had to train through several injuries. she lost both her aunt and uncle to covid-19 last year, and in 2019 after an accident her father was left paralysed from waist down. this is a man who she calls her best friend, her number one supporter, her inspiration. he even built a wooden beam in their backyard for her to practice on when she was younger because they couldn't afford one. now, after she won, she thanked her parents for their support. said her victory was surreal. take a listen to what else she had to say. >> this medal definitely means a lot to me because there was a point in time where i wanted to quit and i just didn't think i would ever get here, including injuries and stuff. so there are definitely a lot of emotions but i'm super proud of myself for sticking with it and believing in myself. >> reporter: alisyn, also a proud momen

selena wang joins us from tokyo. more about those infected athletes. what can you tell us? >> two athletes and one official tested positive for covid-19 in the olympic village as the number of cases link to the olympics continues to grow, now 55 athletes officials and contractors testing positive. it is critical they contain the covid-19 case in the village where thousands of athletes will be staying. i took a visit where it's very much an anti social sanitized bubble not like the usual years of festivity and partying. these athletes are asked to dine alone, but medical experts have raised concern these athletes are sharing rooms. i walked through a suite in the village, where eight athletes would be living, four people sharing one bathroom and 110 square meters total. there is a long list of covid-19 rules, kim, for everybody involved in these games. contact tracing, social distancing, regular testing, even though i've been living in japan as a credentialed journalist i'm tested regularly and fill out a daily health

selena wang is in tokyo with more. tell us what's happening with the protests and what the ioc president is saying. >> reporter: well, alisyn, officials were hoping that once the games officially got kicked off in more beautiful athletic performances were shown for the world, that japanese public sentiment would turn, but still, intense opposition to these games. these protesters were chanting for hours throughout the opening ceremony to cancel the games, that these games are putting sport and money ahead of the japanese people's lives. still a lot of frustration, alisyn, on the ground that these games are going ahead when covid-19 cases are surging in tokyo, the host city is under a state of emergency. and just about 20% of the population is fully vaccinated. we are now up to more than 100 covid-19 cases in japan that are linked to these games as well as a growing history of athletes who are out of the olympics because of covid-19. i spoke to several bystanders who were just trying to get close to the action at the na

cnn's selena wang is at the games for us.nally see the kickoff of the events and watch the opening ceremonies, even though it was more subdued. it does kind of set the tone for everything, doesn't it? what more are you learning about the athletes and how they're feeling today? >> reporter: well, fred, it was incredible to watch those fireworks, the drone light display here in person, and see it light up the sky. but casting shadow over all of this, including the 11 gold medals already won on day one, is covid-19 cases. organizers announcing just on friday another 17 covid-19 cases in japan linked to these games, bringing the total to 127. now more than a dozen athletes who have tested positive inside the olympic village and just a growing list of athletes whose olympic dreams are being cut short, cut off entirely because of covid-19. just heartbreaking stories of their journeys, sometimes careers ending after a lifetime of work, including a dutch rower who said his olympics were over in an instant after testing positive. his

selina wang is in tokyo. what is the mood like there?rica, still intense opposition to the olympics. in fact, during the opening ceremony for hours there was a crowd of protesters chanting to cancel the olympics saying that these games are putting sport and money ahead of people's lives. there is still a strong feeling here the games shouldn't be happening when covid-19 cases are surging in tokyo, when 20% of the population is fully vaccinated and the host city is still under a state of emergency. i was talking to bystanders at the national stadium today and there is a lot of mixed feelings. there are some who think it is not the right time to have a festival. others who say they're excited to watch this on tv. one woman said she bought 20 tickets for different olympic events and she is just bummed out that she can't see any of them. but this event overall, the opening ceremony, was toned down. there was a more somber mood. there was a moment of silence to remember all the people's lives who have been lost from covid-19 and the athletes
