warhol died in 1987. kind of very unexpectedly from complicatio complications following a routine gl routine gallbladder surgery. he is buried here in pittsburgh. you can visit andy warhol's grave if you want. there is a 24-hour webcam on his grave. it has the famous quote that warhol had wanted on his tombstone, the word, figurement. no name, no date, just figment. so we are in the archive study center here at the andy warhol museum. the archives is the heart of the museum. we have all of warhol's personal collections, including decorative art objects, posters, photographs, clothing, scrap books, source material, everything you could imagine that this man collected. we also have the heart of the archives is the time capsule collection. which is a set of 610 cardboard boxes that you can see covering the walls around you. so one of the earliest items that warhol collected as a young boy were movie star images. that he would send away for. probably one of his favorites was this one from shirley temple, that

. -- warhol. i think he comes across as quite funny. it kind of shows that he was a sensitive person. we have all these letters back home. he was close to his family, mother, and religious. they think of studio 54 and -- brities and nick jager mick jagger, so this shows a quiet, since the part of the man. -- sensitive part of the man. >> when you think of catch, you youk of heinz, and when think of heinz, you think of pittsburgh. we are going to take a tour of the heinz exhibit. h.j. heinz was only 10 when he sold his first product. his mother made horseradish in their basement in sharpsburg, a few miles up the allegheny river from downtown pittsburgh. nz put the product in a wheelbarrow and rolled them into downtown pittsburgh and sold them on the street. people loved the product. he ran home and said, mom, what else can we sell? and she made bottled, jarred other things. pittsburgh and heinz went hand came thend find the largest food purveyor in the world. heinz's first product was horseradish,

warhol was a pittsburgh boy. and i went for an event that was one of a kind events that day, it was in the theater at the warhol museum, packed audience. and on the stage under the bright light was a box. and the box was a cardboard box that was kind of roughed up. it looked exactly like a box you would have in your basement with all your papers in it, and there were two catalogers from the museum there. and this was a big event because it was one of warhol's 600-plus time capsules. so warhol, for many years, filled mostly cardboard boxes with stuff. you could call it junk, you could call it stuff, you could call it memorabilia. some of it was worthwhile, some of it, a lot of it wasn't. there were odds and ends, there was junk mail, there were old toothbrush containers that were empty, there were empty prescription bottles. the box that day was up on the stage, and the two catalogers had blue gloves that they put on like they were about to do surgery to protect their hand oils, i guess, from doing anything to the

tradition of straightforward illustration to feature the work of great artists like roger brown and andy warhol. they launched a jazz festival in chicago in 1959 to benefit the urban league. hugh hefner first met lenny when he went to san francisco to hear him perform. this is when many was breaking through with new material that was allowing him to play in nightclubs that were not also strip clubs. hugh hefner was so impressed that he contacted friends in chicago and arranged for lenny bruce to play there. the illinois obscenity statute had been amended to reflect the 1957 supreme court decision, so many people were feeling that nightclubs were really free speech zones. lenny went on to play mr. kelly's in chicago and lead to an interview by studs terkel. the next year, he was filed in an article titled rebel with a cost to cause. he appeared on playboy's penthouse, and then the company published his autobiography, how to talk dirty and influence people. many times he'd stayed at the chicago playboy mansion when he was in town. i would say like contemporary art and jazz, hugh hefner and dug le
