margaret warner has our book conversation. >> warner: in the aftermath of world war one, germany was in economic shambles. but the capital berlin was a vibrant cultural hub, home to avant garde artists and actors like marlene dietrich and to a decadent cabaret life. but as early as the 1920s, a dark cloud was gathering, as adolf hitler and his nazi acolytes gained strength. by the 1930s, the cloud was enveloping the nation, and threatening europe. hitler's rise was witnessed not only by the german people but by some 150 american diplomats and correspondents who had the job of informing their own government and the american public about what was developing. other prominent americans passed through berlin or stayed for a time. author sinclaire lewis, aviator charles lindbergh, a young john f. kennedy and singer josephine baker to name a few. much has been written about american expatriots in paris and london between the wars but very little has been chronicled about these americans in berlin. former "newsweek" journalist and author andrew nagorski has set out to correct that with his n

margaret warner has our story. . >> warner: the crowds in moscow braved a drenching rain today to demonstrate their discontent with newly installed president vlade miles an hour putin. protest leaders put the crowd at 120,000. the police counted 20,000. the authorities granted approval for the demonstration, but last week putin signed a new law imposing heavy fines on anyone causing damage during a rally. and on monday police raided the homes of key opposition figures and called in some for questioning. protestors today remain defiant. >> these latest events, police searches, arrests, prosecutions based on... all of this will only stir up society and those who think about the future. people are tired of putin. people want him to step down. >> warner: large scale protests began last december after putin's united russia party won parliamentary elections marred by fraud. they continued as putin, then prime minister, pursued his return to the russian presidency in march. in an interview with the newshour during the campaign, opposition leader alexei predicted a protracted struggle with putin even

margaret warner has the story. >> warner: the court ruled unanimously today to shield two secret servicegents from being sued on first amendment grounds by a colorado man arrested after he confronted then-vice president dick cheney in 2006. the man argued he'd been arrested because of critical remarks he made about the iraq war. harassment charges against him were ultimately dropped. in an eight-to-zero decision, the high court overturned an appeals court ruling allowg the lawsuit to go forward. to help us sort through this, we're joined by marcia coyle of the "national law journal." warner: what happened in this encounter between vice president cheney and this man involved? >> three secret service agents with mr. cheney at the mall began watching mr. howards because one of them had overheard a cell phone conversation in which mr. howards said he was going to ask the vice president, "how many kids did you kill today?" mr. howards did eventually get to mr. cheney. instead he just told him that he thought the administration's policies in iraq were disgusting. the vice president thanked him
