we are seeing what this reorganization of warner media, what used to be time warner, is going to lookat it is owned by a phone company. i got off the phone with one of the biggest executives in tv and the since was he felt like it was the right time now, that he was not going to have quite as much autonomy and there was going to be a reorganization that might put him under a couple of extra layers. he is used to running this network with almost complete autonomy. said, this is fairly abrupt. if you look at his legacy and what hbo has accomplished in the last three decades, it's pretty incredible. however, there's more competition today than ever before. do you think at&t executives were not happy with its rio's and his most recent performance? >> i don't think they were unhappy with the performance of hbo. to your point, he is a titan of the tv industry. he has been at the network for the past 25-some years. he has seen it grow from a a few subscribers to one of the biggest tv networks in the world. he was there when they green lit "game of thrones," which is by some counts the bigges

when i talked to warner today, he pushed back rather strongly. there are a number of data points showing there were efforts to coordinate, to talk, conspiracy. that's a question he believes that needs to be probed further, including those contacts with paul manafort and kilimnick. we know that inadd ver tantly released that manafort shared polling data in 2016 with kilimnick. he said they need to be investigated further even as republicans say at this point there's no signs of any collusion between trump campaign and the russians, but this revelation from the federal judge last night that paul manafort lied about those interactions with kilimnick add ing more fodder to mark warner as they push forward on the russia probe. >> you're right. it looks like this division on capitol hill over this in intensifying. >> it is and i think one of the reasons we see is clearly because now there's more focus on the senate because the house is in democratic hands, the chairmanships are in democratic hands. there's more pressure on burr, ranking member of the i

and what warner might be thinking as well, we've seen all these meetings, we've seen donald trump jr.ng willing to get dirty secrets from the russians on hillary clinton, isn't that evidence enough? and, laura, neither of these things, because we're talking about the senate intelligence committee, get at all to what's going on in the mueller investigation. >> that's true. remember the congressional oversight role is really a peril leg parallel investigation. it's not to supplement or contribute to mueller. however, they can rely as their congressional oversight function, they can look at evidence that's out there in the public record, including public filings, including for example the inadvertent disclosure that manafort was feeding polling data to somebody linked to the kremlin. they can look at that information and say well that can contribute to our own investigation. so it's pretty disingenuous in my opinion for burr to draw the conclusion that there is no direct evidence when there are still forthcoming interviews, when there's things out in the public that tells the people actu

media has merged with at & t, they operate hbo, warner brothers and turner. now, they all operate as separate entities but at & t has said they are looking at a roughly $2.5 billion in synergy. they also said they want to consolidate back room operations which is why it could make potential sense as to why they would join forces, turner with hbo and a new streaming service. to add more meat to this story, there's another report, too, coming from variety saying that at & t is also in talks with disney. why is that. because disney wants to increase its stake in hulu. hulu is a streaming service and if we are looking at some of the co-owners of hulu at the moment, disney has about 30%, 21st century fox has about 30% which will move over to disney, comcast owns about 30%, that's wrong on the screen there, and at & t owns 10%. so hulu or sorry, disney is looking to take over 70% of hulu. why would at & t sell its stake? one, so that it can focus on its own streaming service and then two, to pay down debt. it has over $180 billion worth of debt and at & t did promi

federal appeals court upholding a district court's decision that the merger between at&t and time warner go through, is legal. justice correspondent jessica schneider joins us now. a lot of folks were surprised the appeal happened after the language. the government tried again and lost here. >> remember that opinion from the district court judge. it was very scathing against the department of justice. this opinion is from the d.c. circuit court of appeals, not quite the same language but the outcome is in fact the same. the three judges in this case ruling that in fact the at&t acquisition of time warner, the parent company of cnn, it was in fact legal. that was the exact same decision that the district court came to back in june. the arguments on appeal were heard in december and now it has taken until the end of february for this court to rule that at&t acquisition is in fact legal and does not break any economic laws, does not improperly influence economics. these judges, this oral argument went on an hour longer than the time was snilsh linitially slat we saw the judges were grilling
