warner bros., discovery, and paramount have held talks about a merger according to bloomberg 's sources. who else to turn to than lucas shaw who leads our screen time coverage to global hollywood. what do we know? lucas: warner bros.'s ceo had lunch with the paramount global ceo. there have been informal conversations between the two companies, also involving cherry red stone which controls paramount. it is early. warner bros. discovery can't even do a deal like this for a few months because of some complications, some issues related to the deal that they did. we have been assuming that there would be greater consolidation in the media business over the last two months, and a deal between these two is one of many scenarios that has been proposed. i don't think this is a huge shock. i think they would be surprised at how quickly it came, maybe they thought they would be discussion in spring of next year. caroline: everyone is deciding how we will see consolidation. everyone has been eyeing the narr

of course, warner is behind one of the most successful films of 2023 in barbie, so again, warner hasy had a great year with barbie, but it is a kind of hit and miss sort of activity. i think you have to see this also in the context of the us market where people are cutting the cord, cable tv is in decline. a lot of the studios have withdrawn their content from cable tv channels and then made it available direct to consumer. so, you know, the us market is undergoing some tremendous changes. and so efficiency is the world, really, because tv audiences are going down, you know, you have to produce different things. for example, a film that shows any cinema is not as powerful as a six episode series that shows on netflix. in terms of engagement. so the whole way in which people produce is going from the film to the series. and these companies are basically looking for synergies that will allow them to survive against what is, in effect, superior competition, certainly with respect to disney plus. competition, certainly with respect to disney plus-— to disney plus. alice, so good to have

warner can't afford to buy paramount right now.hink they're at least two years away from being able to contemplate that. so this is a stock for stock deal, which, you know, isn't necessarily as attractive if you are looking to exit. warner -- sorry, murdoch sold his stake in fox entertainment to disney. the scripps family sold their family to discovery. these were sort of -- we're selling, we're out deals. we're going to accept a piece of a larger merged company. there's the other issue, which is, you know, given that people currently in charge of regulation in our country, the odds of this deal goes through unchallenged, you would be consolidating two of the major five film studios. >> which is ironic, given they both have a crumbling market position, but i guess it goes back to some of the issues around, you know, legacy broad band. >> yeah, look, warner is still going to generate $5 billion in free cash flow. that's about as much as netflix. you can say warner is going in the wrong direction, but this is still a very profitable

what's interesting about the two stories for warner bros. discovery and paramount, at least in 2023, has been the divergence. we've seen some real relative strength in terms of warner bros. discovery versus what's happening with paramount. does paramount need to find a partner in order to survive, going forward? >> it seems like they would need to have some more scale with their businesses. they are very significant in the linear network advertising that they've been transitioning to digital. so, i think that's a misunderstood part of the paramount story. and they've got, you know, pretty good breadth there. there's still an area where there are some court cutting issues. but the paramount plus streaming service maybe could be argued as sub scale, impossibly the volume of production out of paramount studios, while it's got a great history and great library and a number of great pieces of its own ip, that's also producing, you know, lower than some of the other peers such as universal, disney, or warner bros. discovery. so, i think in this er
