and sue, this is an oil company that warren buffett has a stake in. yeah, warren buffett has been a big fan of oxy and particularly its leadership by ceo vicki hollub. and he's been buying shares throughout 2023. so that adds extra attention to this story. but oxy buying canadian carbon capture startup carbon engineering is also a big story because they want to expand their leadership position in removing carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. as mentioned, this is a 1.1 billion all cash deal expected to close by the end of the year. now, the two companies have been working together in partnership for the past four years on oxy west texas stratus project that's set to be the world's largest direct air capture plant by 2025. dac is the buzz word and it is the way it's described. and what it really means is pulling carbon dioxide directly out of the atmosphere. and my colleague kevin crowley in houston says it's kind of like oxy is now jumping ahead to carbon capture 2.0, where many of the rivals are doing carbon capture 1.0, pulling carbon dioxid

chris warren, thank you so much. outbreak of tornadoes hit parts of massachusetts and rhode island today. the twisters uprooted trees, knocked out power, and caused widespread damage from johnston, rhode island, to mansfield, and north attleboro, massachusetts. there were no reports of serious injuries. now to the island of maui, where nearly 1,000 federal workers are on the ground to help with the wildfire recovery, including atf agents tasked with determining where and how the fire started. anger is growing over the response from local officials, and questions mount for the head of emergency management, who resigned amidst the criticism. cbs's jonathan vigliotti has the latest. >> reporter: before the flames obliterated everything in lahaina, residents like shannon say there was time to activate maui's emergency sirens. do you think, had those sirens gone off, it could have saved lives? >> absolutely. i don't think. i know. we all are prepared for that. we know that sound. >> reporter: now, there is anger to this.
