when the trumans came home to independence in 1953 from washington dc, margaret was by that time a new yorker in the midst of her singing and then eventually television career. and she saw that chandelier in new york and sent it back to independence thinking it would put a lovely touch to the signing room that the trumans had redone with the furniture they acquired while living in washington dc. so this beautiful chandelier was assembled by the entire family piece by piece and hung and installed by bess' brother, george wallace. now in those post presidential years when it was just mr. and mrs. truman eating at the table, it probably wasn't set like this. but once dinner was over for the evening, after the dishes were done. then they would proceed to go into the reading room, because they were not television watchers. they would proceed quickly into a room that meant a lot to them. this spot is very special to all of us. because behind this table, harry truman loved to spend a lot of his time here in the reading room and on this table is one of his favorite books about one of his favor

introducing the reader to me and you to michael and michael came out as a gay man and moved to washington dcand started this internship as hiv-aids advocacy in dc. a question from earlier, i am going to live in dc and do lgbt organizing and activism work and things will be great. what he discovered at the dc-based organization, people cared more about their job title and where the next office was going to be, and the work they are supposed to be doing. so it went back to roswell, georgia, to live with his sister, who is joining us, i discovered i would rather eat glass with a tabasco chaser than live in washington dc, one of my favorite quote of the book. he moved to roswell and ended up making a tremendous impact in georgia. and a public university, and got emily university, the top university in atlanta to cover sex reassignment surgery before harvard and started a transgender discussion group, got hormone therapy covered and by the time i came out in 2012 which was early on in gender awareness, he hit the ground running on these issues and had gotten stuff done at emory before ivy league

next we visit the baseball americana exhibit at the library of congress and washington, dc to learn aboutaseball's origins and early days. library ofto the congress. i am susan rayburn, curator of the u.s. exhibition baseball americana. this was a major collaboration. we have got some incredible things on display, things you have probably never seen before. let's start with some of the earliest. so right now we are standing in the front of the exhibit, looking at origins and early days, where we have got some artifacts that suggest baseball has a history that is much longer than the 19th century. in fact we have got an example from a medieval manuscript, -- these are little miniature figures that were part of a border of a book produced in 1334. we have a monk and a nun with a ball and a bat and some monks and nuns in what would have been a primitive outfield. this shows you bat and ball games for centuries before europeans began calling different kinds of games baseball. our next stop here is this cute book. i absolutely adore it. it is one of my favorites items in our collections. it is
