then they have to figure out if somebody does have a temperature, what do they do at washington dulles airport? >> you're right. taking the temperature once they get here on u.s. soil, the thinking is this can close that gap. if you're taking a flight like that, it could be more than a 24-hour trip. you may not have the symptoms when you are departing but you could develop them during this very long trip. they're trying to close that gap between the time when you look perfectly fine and then all of a sudden things change. but it's worth noting nothing is foolproof. we know the incubation period is 21 days. so etven if they have the best screening, they all are very transparent in saying it is quite possible we will see someone else arriving on u.s. soil who may have ebola and just at the time they were at the airport did not show any symptoms. >> what i'm hearing is they're going to start screening people at international airports coming in from -- passengers coming in from west africa. they want to make sure that they didn't develop the symptoms on that 24-hour flight coming over to t

rene marsh at dulles airport outside washington. sanjay, these four close family members of mr. duncan who were ordered the stain side their home, and if they leave before october 19th, they could be placed under arrest. why would authorities require this? >> well, they want to keep a close eye on them. the concern is that they had direct contact with mr. duncan, could they develop symptoms themselves. at first they said, look, it's okay, go about your business. we just want to make sure you take your temperature twice a day. we have to be able to monitor you that way. for whatever reason, either because they weren't complying or were not able to reliably get those temperatures, they say we'll put you in a location where we can find you. they went through steps of bringing them their food. they're trying to make it so that these people really stay in one location. a lot of this is happening because of this patient, mr. duncan, and not getting tested and admit right away. want to give you a little background on what happened there, carol. >> in this hospital, thomas eric duncan,

>> reporter: early next week here at washington dulles, greta and saturday at new york's jfk.e airports have the bulk of the folks coming in from the hot zone in africa. about 150 people a day go through a combination of chicago o'hare, newark's jfk and here at dulles. when they come in, they face additional screening from customs and border protection. first off, their temperature taken with a no contact thermometer. it gets their temperature. if they have a fever, they go to a quarantine room set up at each airport for a health interview, discussions with members of the cdc and health officials who make a game time decision about whether they are put in quarantine or monitored. the real issue is, is it going to work? keep this in mind, thomas eric duncan, the guy who died after coming through washington dulles. officials don't think he had a fever when he came through. he would have been allowed to pass and obviously, he died shortly there after from ebola. one of the reasons for that, ebola has a 21 day incubation period. up to 21 days, people can appear to be fine, but be

, flight 822 from washington dulles to dallas, ft.y, want to ask you about, the american cameraman working for nbc, diagnosed with ebola. you have been reading details. what do you make of this? >> this is an american, working, living in liberia three years on various projects. he has been there some time. what is interesting, just this past tuesday, i guess where he started working for nbc, probably on this new project with nancy snyderman. and wednesday, he, notice heed had a fever. getting a routine fever check. why he was getting a routine fever check, unclear, maybe he was worried about an ex-pope sure. regardless, that fever check showed that in fact he did have a slight fever. and at that point, it went to the doctors without borders camp. camp and he was tested. took about 12 hours for the test to come back and it came back positive for ebola. don't know how sick he is certainly at this point but he is flown back to the united states to get treatment as you heard. >> doctor, you and i talked about this before the break. again,

from there he boards united airlines flight 951 en route to washington dulles connecting to another flight 822 to dallas. september 20th he arrives in dallas and heads to this apartment complex to visit family. four days later he starts developing symptoms. he walks into this dallas emergency room on the 25th of september, vomiting and with the fever. he tells the nurse he had traveled from africa but is sent home with antibiotics and does not undergo an ebola screening. september 28th, his condition worsens. he returns to the hospital by ambulance and is placed in isolation. the next day a family friend calls the cdc complaining that the hospital isn't moving quickly enough with his test results. by tuesday the 30th, the lab results confirm the patient has ebola. the hospital admits it was a failure to communicate among hospital staff that led to the patient's release after his initial visit. >> he volunteered that he had traveled from africa in response to the nurse operating the checklist in asking that question. regretfully that information was not fully communicated throughout the ful
