let's go now to nbc's aaron gilchrist at reagan washington national airport. he's got the latest on the investigation into the crash there. okay, aaron, we're hearing there are still a lot of victims in the water. i know when this crash happened, everybody was trying to help, you know, local cruise ships, private vessels were out there trying to help officials. what is the update on recovering those victims and what else do we know about the crash? >> yeah. you're right, christina, that cruise ship, there's a dinner cruise ship that's still out on the water here, helping with the salvage process that's underway right now. and you're also right, that a key focus of what's happening today is really on recovering those bodies that remain in the water. as we've been reporting, we know at least 41 people have been recovered to this point. and the process of recovering those other bodies is one that is going to be very carefully undertaken. the dc fire chief told us yesterday that he believed raising the fuselage. those the three pieces of the airplane that went dow

nbc's aaron gilchrist is at reagan washington national airport with more on this. aaron, when are officials expecting to learn some more information about the data recovered from the black boxes, and when are we going to hear about it? >> well, the expectation is that they'll be able to learn more information very soon from all three of the data points, data collection points that they're trying to assess. i do want to mention, though, that we expect a news briefing to start here with dc unified command. the people who are in charge of the search, recovery and salvage operation, that should start in about 20 minutes or so. and i think what we'll hear them talk about is what you're seeing on your screen here. now, this is a large crane that we've seen come in on a barge in the last hour or so. we knew that the expectation was they would need to use one of these large cranes in order to lift the fuselage of the airplane out of the water. here, along with the wreckage of the helicopter as well. and so we expect to get an update on when that process might get underway.

. >> the control tower team at washington national airport is actually composed of 4 to 5 controllers, and they're working on several different operational positions at the time with different levels of responsibility. for instance, one controller is working all the aircraft, taxiing in and taxiing out. another controller is working all the aircraft that are landing and departing, and then another controller could be working the helicopter traffic in and around the vicinity of the airport. they need to be in close coordination with each other as they go about their business, but they're also assisted by technology such as surface radar systems that track the aircraft on the ground and provide alerts in the event that an aircraft strays where it shouldn't go. and additionally, they have tower radar displays that monitor all the traffic in the airspace around the airport. so when you put this tower team and these tools together, you have the ability to form situational awareness that you can update in real time in order to establish and maintain the separation between the aircraft. it's

national airport. with the progress now underway. hey there. five days since the potomac plane crash, right by reagan national airport here in washington. take a look at this for the first time. first responders are on the river actively pulling wreckage from american airlines, 5342. that crj 700, that regional jet. earlier this morning, we saw what appeared to be one of the two engines lifted onto a barge. that engines next stop will be a nearby hangar, where the ntsb is going to use it as one of the critical pieces of evidence to figure out what went wrong here. now, first responders and dive crews have been out on the river all weekend long, essentially rehearsing what they're doing now. and remember, as of the last update, there are still victims unaccounted for. so crews have this very, very delicate balance of both removing the wreckage while also trying to recover additional people. now, the recovery operation for the american airlines regional jet is expected to take about three days, three days for them to lift all of the pieces of the plane from the river onto a barge and then get it to that hangar. once they're done with that
