>> pete williams in our washington newsroom tonight, thanks. >>> and we're learning details this evening about the fbi's secretive airborne surveillance program. it's centered on a fleet of order looking planes with extraordinary capabilities. including the ability to lock on to your cell phone. stephanie gosk has been looking into it. >> reporter: fbi investigations often rely on surveillance to either find criminals or catch them in the act. but what many may not realize is how often that surveillance comes from the sky. an associated press investigation found that the fbi controls a fleet of planes. mounted with sophisticated video cameras and often cell phone tracking devices called cell tower simulators. >> these are fake cell towers that send out a signal and force every phone within their range to send back identifying information. >> reporter: the planes, possibly more than 100, are registered using fake companies. the a.p. identified at least 13. the fbi flew about 30 cities in 11 states in just one month. this plane with a can a are a underneath was used to conduct surveillance

our justice correspondent pete williams joins us now from our washington newsroom. pete? >> reporter: lester, administration officials say that this second intrusion happened at roughly the same time as the breach of federal personnel records announced a week ago, believed to be from china. this other one got background details on people who hold or were applying for sensitive government positions, the kind requiring security clearances. officials say this other database includes such highly personal details as date and place of birth, social security number, work history, even names of parents and other relatives. although both these breaches were discovered in april, it's still not clear how many federal employee records were obtained. officials say they believe the chinese were most interested in using this data to try to get other government secrets, not to steal identities for financial reasons. lester. >> pete williams tonight. thank you. >>> now to the role reversal in washington that delivered a stinging defeat to president obama today on an issue near and dear to

washington. news4's megan fitzgerald spoke with a former fbi profiler about the search warrant. meagan joins us now in our newsroom. what have you learned? >> reporter: the evidence released in these new documents are very critical to this case according to our fbi source. while police haven't made any additional arrests our experts say what was taken from the savopoulos home are items that could die other suspects to the crime. for three weeks, police thoroughly search the mansion on woodland drive, looking for clues about who was involved in killing three family members and their housekeeper. these court documents show police took clothing, fiber some bedding, shoe prints, the pizza police took from the home allowed police to collect dna that eventually tied to the crime and right now the only named suspect. nbc4 criminal analyst clint van zandt says not everyone is in the national dna database which means it could take weeks to compare evidence to arrest possible suspects. the length of the time of this investigation suspect something he says raises any red flags. >> csi-type of hairs and fibers and fingerprint
