now, the governor of washington state says it will cost $15 million to fix the bridge. he has declared a state of emergency in the three counties that rely on the bridge for commerce. the ntsb, inspectors plan to spend as many as ten days investigating the bridge collapse. it is not clear how long the bridge which is a main artery into kaccanada, how long it wil remain closed. with more expected delays on this memorial day weekend. this is not the first time this has happened. the 58-year-old bridge was inspected in november after it was struck by another vehicle. reports showed at that time that it had impact damage, tears, structure cracks and gouges but washington state officials say that it was apparently they say safe to drive on. this makes me think of minneapolis where i am from. remember the i-35 bridge collapsing, 13 people dying. thank goodness no one died in this. >> there are tens of thousands of bridges throughout the country that need to be checked and repaired. >>> let's talk about the roads. a lot of people will be on the roads. will it be a rainy drive?

it happened in washington state. cars were plunging into the river. the bridge is 55 miles from seattle. it's near mount ever northern. remarkably and faithfully in this case everybody is okay. one survivor said the roadway disappeared in front of his eyes. he hit the brakes but not in time. he went off that bridge with his wife and moments ago authorities say they know what caused the collapse. david lee miller joins us on that. >> reporter: as bad as this was. it could have been a great deal worse and it bears repeating. no one was killed. but yes, it was terrifying for drivers as the bridge along the i-5 corridors collapsed. one driver, a navy sailor described seeing the bridge disappear into a puff of dust. he saw the water holding and you slide on as tight as you can. you popped it back into place and then he helped his wife who appeared to be in shock. >> when this call initially came in some of the deputy boot operators were on duty. they are. >> reporter: a witness on the shoreline who watched the collapse described the whole thing as surreal.

washington's governor has declared a state of emergency. in three counties in the area. the national transportation safety board is expected to take seven to ten days to investigate. how a truck reportedly caused the collapse. new tonight at 8-- kron 4's charles clifford has a look at how traffic is being re-routed around the damaged section of bridge. this is a google earth view of the bridge where interstate 5 crosses the skagit river. the section that collapsed is here on the north end of the bridge. about 160 feet of all four travel lanes fell into the water, completely blocking the roadway. as a result, traffic is now being detoured around this bridge. fortunately, there is another crossing here about a quarter of a mile to the east. this bridge connects the cities of mt vernon and burlinton washington. in the north, the detour starts here, runs along surface streets, crosses the skagit river and the reconnects with interstate 5.. here. this route is about a mile and half long. the washington state department of transportation has also set up a second longer detour.
