washington's initials. his middle name was augustus, and my full name is erica augusta wagner so make what you will of that. a strange story perhaps so i will elaborate somewhat. i grew up across the river on the upper wi side. have to admit i never set foot on the brooklyn bridge until i was a teenager. i got myself a boyfriend, young english civil engineer. he came to visit me in new york one winter, but in truth, i think it wasn't really me he wanted to visit. it was the brooklyn bridge. and so we walked on the promenade together, and like so many before and so many since, i was struck with wonder by the bridge, and it was no bad thing that i had someone with me who could explain to me how it really worked. the boyfriend did what boyfriends do, he disappeared. but there you good. however, my fascination with the bridge remained. how did it get there? who made it? i began to read all i could about it, and that is how i met washington. i read hamilton skylar's early biography of the roeblings, david mccull

around 1900, washington, d.c. was celebrate iing the centenni and of course around the country, many of the cities were developing parklands, such as central park and new york. there was an interesting congress in doing something similar here in d.c. and senator james mcmillan was appointed chairman of the senate park commission and the purpose was to really look at the laffont plans and to attempt to implement the laffont plan and really make washington, d.c. a premier nation's capitol and one of the greatest cities in the country. of course, part of that plan involved creation of a national mall with public buildings and monuments and museums along a grassy area ventures south from the capitol building. in order to accomplish the plan, the railroad stations which were located too close to the capitol building, needed to be removed. if you can imagine not only did you have two train stations, but you had a number of tracks and railroad crossings throughout the city in order to get to the stations. >> daniel bernh

so washington complied. and he had the artist paint this miniature of him, and a piece that martha treasured for the rest of her life. an 18th inscription said she was wearing it. we even have here an image of martha. the other item we have is a letter. it's one of three surviving documents from george to martha washington. this letter and another letter were actually found in martha washington's desk while peter owned it. and what's so significant of this letter is where george tells martha he's been given command of the continental army. he tells her he must proceed immediately to boston to take command of the army. it's such a significant document especially because mrgta washington burned all of the correspondence between she and her husband after his death because she felt that was one aspect of their very public relationship that could remain private. so this is a very treasured item. one of the other objects i wanted to highlight is this camp stool. it's actually one of two surviving camp stools that

martha washington and george washington married, it was her second marriage. and all the money was hers. that when he married her, he made a really good catch as they say. her first husband had husband she, martha, was accustomed to considerable comfort and wealth in virginia where she lived with her first husband, and so she kind of transfers that skill that she's already amassed as the wife of a wealthy plantation owner when she marries george washington who is still finding his way economically when he becomes the commander in the american revolution. and so when we look at someone like martha washington, and we sort of see the frilliness of her outfit, i think that balances really well with the real focused, kind of piercing gaze that she gives us. again, this is somebody not to be messed with. she was short in stature, but i think she was might ney personality and charles wilson peal's portrait of her for his museum is a wonderful study. just look at that chin. she's not somebody who will acquiesce to anyone, even her husband, president george washington.
