as you may know, the city has a zero waste policy. as part of the plastic bag are very difficult to recycle and they contaminate san francisco's recycling and composting programs. they interfere with san francisco's official goal of zero waste by 2020. i want to give you a little history of how the problem has been addressed in san francisco. i mentioned the 2007 ordinance. i will tell you more about that in the 2010 revolution. as a result of supervisor mirkarimi's legislation, san francisco became the first american city to ban plastic bags from use at large grocery stores and pharmacies. all other san francisco stores or restaurants currently may still offer single use plastic bags. supervisor mirkarimi, the department of the environment, and others, have always contemplated since 2007 that the legislation would be a first step and imagined event at all stores and a charge for bags. that has now been done overseas for many years and now-in number of california communities as well. san francisco was in the lead on the issue in 2007

we do about 80 million gallons of waste water here in san francisco, which means we basically fill up 120 olympic sized swimming pools each and every day here in the city. we protect public health and safety and environment because we are discharging into the bay and into the ocean. this is essentially the first treatment here at our waste water treatment facility. what we do is slow down the water so that things either settle to the bottom or float to the top. you see we have a nice selection of things floating around there, things from bubble gum wrappers, toilet paper, whatever you dump down the toilet, whatever gets into our storm drains, that's what gets into our waste water treatment and we have to clean. >> see these chains here, this keeps scum from building up. >> on this end in the liquid end basically we're just trying to produce a good water product that doesn't negatively impact the receiving water so that we have recreation and no bad impact on fish and aquatic life. solids is what's happening. . >> by sludge, what exactly do you mean? is that the actual technical term? . >> it's a technical term and it's used in a lot of different ways,

as you know, 2009, the city passed a law regarding the goals for the conversion of waste. we responded with our own zero waste program. we have come across something called the big valley contractors. a cute name. looks like this, for all of you that have not seen it. we are going to be looking with big belly compactors to do a pilot program in fisherman's wharf where we have the highest density traffic and wait time. what they do, first of all, instead of garbage cans there are two compactors. one is for composting. one is for trash and recycling. as you know, the city's trash collector does they're sorting at the '96. they take them together and sort it on our behalf. what is great about this compactors is that they are solar operated. as they start to get filled, they have a sensor that will compact the waist and recyclables. they will notify the port means division when they need to be emptied. we are hoping that this results in a greater efficiency with respect to the port's ability to pick up the garbage. particularly in a fisherman's wharf so, at the end of the prog
