c-span. and this is the very first time i've had a chance out of 30 years i've been watching c-span to call. o i'm very excited to get on the air. and again, i start my day with c-span. i had a comment and a question for the congressman. the first thing i want to observe, i really tried to get in when congressman nunes was on the program and i took some exceptions to what he was saying when you first asked him about some of the reports from some of the demonstrations in washington against this bill that the n word was used. and he sort of justified his comment as saying when there's a totalitarian system, then people have a tendency to get just as aroused and they use those kind of terms. i really think that certainly at the decorme and civility that was unacceptable with his response. the second thing is that a veteran called and indicated to him that he was satisfied with his health care. and mr. nunes was saying again that there was no free ride. and i'm a military veteran. i'm a combat veteran of vietnam. and for him to say that there's no free rides, a military veteran who has put on the

i just wanted to say that i have been watching c-span for a while now and each time i hear the republicans talk about fannie mae and freddie mac, to meet it is the sort of a code word for minorities who have been shut out of the housing industry. i mean, when you go in to try to buy a house, you are shuffled into -- what do you call it? the subprime mortgage is what you end up getting. to me personally, i feel that to the housing problem is a result of the racism actually in this country where it permeates every system in this society. so, when they tried to blame fnma and freddie mac as a result of -- blame fannie mae and freddie mac, they should blame racism. guest: it is certainly a very charged issue. i don't know about the shorthand for subprime loans -- fannie mae and freddie mac guaranteed what are called conforming loans, which traditionally had not been the subprime loans. in recent years they did get into the subprime market to try to compete with the private lenders. but fannie mae and freddie mac were not big subprime lenders throughout most of their history. host: define what

today, i hope that my parents are actually watching c-span because they are both research engineers. at a certain level i remain concerned that i still regret that i left science and technology first for law and now for what i call fun service. when i was here on this floor being sworn in, i could remember seeing them right there and what was going through my head was, you know, i wonder if my dad is still angry that i left science and technology. he cares about it, and my mom does also, because they realize that engineering is hard and that it's important. and recognition in this resolution today is appropriate because it recognizes that engineering is hard. all of us can remember that when we went through college, the engineers took these classes where they worked really, really hard and got three credits for it. and we took things that weren't that hard and we got five credits for it. so it is a difficult thing for a student and it remains challenging as a young professional, and i think that this body and this nation should recognize and celebrate those things which are hard. at
