came up to the -- as the flooding came up to the waterline. and then in the latter stanls, started to increase again. we have a number of curves that deal with that kind of condition. we also talk about, and as most of you have seen in v in movies that the ship started to sink, go down by the head, started to tilt down. we actually plot the results of how long it took to go down by a certain amount over time. for example, 45 minutes after the collision, the titanic would have looked like the above image that you see here, only down by the head by about three degrees, not a lot. most people thought that the ship is not going to sink. all right, it took on some water. 2:15 in the morning which is two hours and 40 minutes after the iceberg strike, the vessel looked like this, where the crow easiness had reached the waterline. it was down by the head about ten. and the stresses on the ship at that point were twice as much as what the ship was designed to stand. titanic, by the way, was not a weakly designed ship as some of you may have heard in so

>> what may have caused this tree to crash into a warehouse rupturing gas and waterlines. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2news at five. >> evening. >> after years of planning the project to tear down the doyle drive structure is nearly done. want to give you a live look at the work currently underway from news chopper two. the first one was deemed unsafe years ago which prompted transportation officials to come up with a plan to replace it with a new safer roadway. as you can see from the live pictures, they have been knocking down the drive. this work taking place starting friday around 8:00, its been continuing now since this time. doyle drive opened back in 1937, ultimately by 2015 the idea is to open what's called the presidio parkway. that's slated to open in 2015. that's a one billion dollar project that will include four tunnels, two bridges, a landscape median and safety shoulders. we are expecting an update any minute from caltrans. we have a crew there monitoring the press conference and when it starts we will bring it to you live.

right now, repair work continues on underground waterlines, near the 28th street exit. it's a headache for commuters. but as mike schuh explains, it could end up costing the city more than expected. >> reporter: because those middle lanes are unsafe, the city will spend millions in emergency repairs. >> reporter: the city knows there's a problem under here. >> well, basically, we have some erosion that is going on underground. the leaks have washed away tons of dirt under those lanes in this section that are closed. large cavities under the pavement. >> initially, the city estimated it would cost million to do this work. but when only one contractor bid, the price doubled. >> we opened the bids up. and there were two that didn't come. but the bid came in at -- at approximately 2 million. >> that information is summarized below. >> reporter: so today, the board of estimates, a 2 million repair was approved. and they're told, once they find what is really below the surface, it could be even more extensive. for motorists, already tired of this, they're less concerned about
