. >>> with the iowa caucuses machine, pete buttigieg is talking to supporters near waterloo, and the race is getting tighter, the jabs getting sharper. gloves seemed to come off earlier this week after joe biden accused bernie sanders not being a real democrat. biden later tried to walk back comments. joining me from the campaign trail, arlette saenz in iowa. and ryan nobles in indianola. are the recent attacks against sanders a sign biden may be worried or just in the fight? what's going on? >> reporter: well, fred, those comments from joe biden earlier in the week were made during a question and answer session with reporters, but at his actual campaign events with voters like here in north liberty, biden isn't taking swipes at his democratic rivals, instead, he focused making the argument he is best equipped to take on president trump in the general election, pointing to the attacks from the president and republicans as a sign of concern that they face about potentially facing biden if he is the nominee. and listen to what he had to tell voters in north liberty as he tried to prese

on the stump in waterloo, which is northeastern iowa, he kind of took a jab at medicare for all, saying it's something that won't be able to be implemented. you're taking away people's health care, and if they don't want it, they shouldn't have to take it. from the voters i spoke to, a lot of them like joe biden. but what they see in pete buttigieg is a new face, someone who is forward looking, who is pragmatic like the message of joe biden without going too far and maybe of the warren and bernie part of the party. >> you heard ryan nobles talk about the sanders campaign, and the sanders campaign will tell you they feel like they're surging to the finish line. the converse of that is the biden campaign which is lowering expectations, on the record talking to whoever will listen, saying that we don't need to win in iowa, it isn't about winning here. what are you hearing and why? >> that's right. i did attend this breakfast roundtable this morning. it was a bloomberg news event where chris dodd, who is a dear friend of vice president biden's and also bernie sanders' senior adviser, we wer

video, several mayors around the country, the mayor of dayton, the mayor of parkland, the mare of waterloo, iowa, have posted tweets defending mayor pete, pushing back against the vice president who is seemingly questioning their significance as mayors as compared to his tenure as vice president. there's one other tweet i want to mention. that would be the husband of pete buttigieg putting out a tweet essentially retweeting an old tweet of his in which he wrote, quote, i urge you not to argue with trolls, just be true to your heart. biden has clearly laump lly lau grenade here as they see the former south bend mayor take hold here. >> i want to go to ali vitale with the klobuchar campaign. the senator had a very strong performance last night. how is her campaign capitalizing on last night's performance? >> reporter: they're capitalizing in terms of the money they raised. they raised $2 million since last night. that's huge for a campaign like theirs that has been operating on a smaller budget than a lot of the campaigns she's in league with. she's doing events, trying to pitch voters on he
