iowa's coasts. the dubuque, cedar rapids, waterloo but did not do well in des moines. he only one won county in the des moines media market sort of right outside dallas county. and that's where for instance mike huckabee got a huge bump. two other counties that we're paying a lot of attention to have to do with where iowa city is and ames, iowa state and iowa, two places we expect ron paul to be able to, quote, run up the score. but one other area to look for is on the western side, sioux city and in the omaha media market. that is a more conservative area. romney did surprisingly well there the last time. a lot of evangelicals. we'll see if he can equal that and surpass it. one thing to keep in mind on santorum, rachel, as a devout catholic the eastern part of the state the dubuque area in particular a lot of catholics. maybe he cuts into where romney did well four years ago. so it's nice to have apples versus apples at least with mitt romney and considering that all of a sudden rick santorum is the social conservative so we have a lot of ways we can look at the resul

announced his candidacy in south caroline with, the next day rick perry came to iowa to the very sim building in waterlooampaign. and rick perry went to the top of the charts right away. that took michele bachmann's bump away and that was a disappointment for her. we hadn't, there was a lot of things going on campaign wise where it was hard it maintain communications. some of the stuff, we didn't talk as off then as we should have. but in the end, i'm looking at this big picture and i said that as good of a friend she is, as much as i like and respect her, as much as we are together, i wasn't toward say, this is -- this isn't about friendship, this is about the president of the united states. she has been a fantastic job here. she has opened doors, especially for women, but for strong conservatives across the country. i haven't come to the conviction. it doesn't mean it is a plus or minus on michele bachmann, that doesn't exist across the board to the candidates. i could build a perfect candidate out of the proponents vying for the nod tomorrow night. >> is mitt romney a true conservative? >> he's been -

iowa primary. we set the stage. now i say one last thing. we were over earlier tonight in waterloo who had the largest single sight for caucusing. and a very distant rel relative came from pennsylvania for his great, great grandfather spoke for me. and he was very kind he's gotten to know my younger daughter and said to her what he's going to say. part of what he said is about his two sons who just came back from serving in the military. it reminded me why iowa experience and new hampshire experience places where have you to see people, you can't just buy tv ads and use robo calls. in the end, it's people. this process is what they risk their lives to preserve. this process, people coming together. sharing values. sharing fears and dreams. finding ways to come get it to work. unlike current total mess in washington which i believe is a bipartisan mess. and american system, over time works when american people roll up their sleeves to make us work. it's part of what made these ads. everyone of us, this process survives it's young men and women risk their lives to allow us to do this

iowa. the fact that she was born in waterloo. she is a congresswoman from minnesota, she came here, she officially kicked off her campaign in the city of waterloo. talking about the iowan values and so forth. it absolutely didn't take off beyond what happened earlier in the summer, which was her very strong showing. in fact, not only did it not take off, it absolutely plummeted. the more she went around the state, the more she talked, the less she gained voters. that was obviously a huge, huge problem in the results that we saw last night. >> she was one of the candidates, it seemed that she struck the right balance when it came to negative and positive ads there. she really saved much of her fire power for president obama, almost as if she was trying to leap frog above some of her competitors there. she really went very hard after the president. did that seem to resonate with the supporters? >> reporter: you know, it obviously didn't resonate enough because what they wanted was somebody who was quite a different candidate. cover
