[ gunfire ] >> reporter: watertown police say they feared for their lives three days after the bombing. >> a state police officer at the scene suggested that there were two people that they had. >> reporter: when they caught up with the two marathon bombing suspects. police say the brothers jumped out of their cars in this quiet neighborhood and began shooting and throwing bombs. they say when police tackled tamerlan about here, dzhokhar jumped in his car and escaped, running over his brother as he fled. police say during the shootout the brothers used the carjacked suv as cover. one officer told nbc news a month after the bombing that he came face-to-face with tamerlan. >> he was about six or eight feet from me firing his pistol at me. i was firing at him. i ran out of ammunition. >> reporter: police say tamerlan ran out of bullets, took off running but was stopped in the street. >> i holstered up and chased after him and tackled him. >> reporter: sergeant maclellan said at one point i was afraid i was going to be kil

they ended up in watertown. they got his atm card from him.d that dzhokhar tsarnaev got into the backseat. they switched so his brother started driving. this mr. main was in the passenger seat. he of course thought he was going to die. he says, tamerlan tsarnaev told him that the boston marathon bombing, he was the guy who did that and he had just killed this police officer. then he got a call in the car, was told not to answer it. he says if you speak in chinese, i will shoot you. so he let the call go. he then got a text, and it was his roommate calling him to tell him that things were dangerous out there. he should probably come home. it's a fascinating story. he said he was scared for his life. he ended up bailing out of the car and ran into a shell gas station. that's how this shootout ultimately pursued into watertown began. abby? >> very fascinating development there is. ron mott in boston for us. thanks so much. >>> turning now to what could be the biggest victory against isis so far. iraqi forces have retaken most of the city of tikri

. >> reporter: during the intense shoot-out with the tsarnaev brothers in watertown, witnesses say dzhokhar threw a pressure cooker bomb at the police. it exploded with such force, the fbi says that a huge piece flew into this nearby car penetrating more than halfway into a rear door. the name of the company that made the pressure cooker is clearly visible, and an fbi agent testified today that it's the same brand as the pressure cookers that held the two bombs set off three days earlier near the marathon finish line. the fbi says the bomb was thrown from down the street landed here and blew up with pieces found as far as a black away and embedded into the houses on both sides of the street. and the fbi says the lid of the pressure cooker was actually found on the other side of this house in the corner of a side yard. that's the lid, the fbi says, where it landed on the grass. the lock for the pressure cooker was found stuck in the front wall of a house. prosecutors say that tsarnaev's laptop computer contained instructions for making pressure cooker bombs. pete williams, nbc news, boston.

you mention the watertown, massachusetts owner of the boat that dzhokhar tsarnaev was captured in hetially lifted for the community, you could come out of the house. he noticed foam cushions in place to protect his boat from the trailer, it was shrink wrapped for winter he noticed it was on the ground. he got a ladder looked up saw blood, still not thinking there's any connection to this manhunt. then peered into the boat and saw dzhokhar tsarnaev in fetal position and quickly ran into the house. he has come and gone from the stand, they're just about coming into court, a person on the stand now is an old friend of dzhokhar tsarnaev met as eighth graders, were friendly all through high school. the feds have charged him with gun possession and drug possession in connection that ruger handgun used to kill officer collier was a gun he owned at one point, he had given it to the tsarnaev brothers eventually wanted to get it back and never came back and eventually was the gun used to kill that officer. very interesting testimony in court this morning. >> thanks for that update there. >>> a
