they believe he is holed up, possibly in a building in watertown, massachusetts, and they've created a 20-block perimeter around that area. they've brought in transit buses to try and get some of the people of the watertown out of the area. other people that they can't reach, they're telling to shelter in place, lock their doors, stay away from doors and windows, don't answer the door for anyone, call 911 if anybody approaches. they're going through that area looking for possible unexploded devices. there have been reports that during the police chase that led to the shoot-out and the killing of one of the suspects, that they were seen throwing explosive devices out of the vehicle. so, obviously, there are going to be some that need to be rendered safe or detonated that are safe. all the while police are trying to make sure if they have this second suspect cornered, that he doesn't get away. >> chris palone from boston, thanks very much for that update. we want to give you an update on how markets are trading, as well, before we take another quick break. here is a key map across europ

let's go now to scott cohn right now in watertown, massachusetts. over to you. >> sue, there's been focus all morning on the area that's behind me. it's a neighborhood full of a lot of smaller, single family homes and some public housing as well. i'm going to be no more specific about that as far as the location is concerned. we have indication that there's been some activity there. i'm going to hold off on exactly what it is until we can confirm it further. but for quite a while the police helicopter that had been circling fairly low for much of the morning was hovering high up in this area about half a mile behind me. it seems to have moved on now and it's also may have something to do with the fact that the winds have kicked up. i'll not certain about that. all sorts of police activity and also the military, national guard and others have been moving in and replacing police in some instances and in some of the areas it feels like they are moving in for the long haul with port-a-potties and salvation army truck and things like that to feed people

we're told we have an fbi presence on the scene in watertown, massachusetts. so, earlier we said it was just local. police apparently now, the fbi has also come to the scene in watertown where that one suspect was apprehended. the significance of that, the potential significance of that, is that obviously the fbi is the federal bureau of investigation. that's for a national crime, not just for a local crime. if this were to be a serious crime that took place, and a suspect that was wanted in a serious crime, the fbi would be involved. that's not to say that the suspect is wanted in the boston marathon bombings. but that would increase the likelihood it's something of significance. what's going on here, this is a crime scene that's been shut off since monday. we see investigators come and go into the area and we know that just yesterday we saw some of them inspecting one of the sites. but generally speaking, we don't have a great idea of what they are doing beyond our immediate line of sight and the media and the public is kept at bay, away from the investigati

lester holt in watertown, massachusetts, after a dramatic night, the two men suspected of carrying out the marathon bombing in boston on monday have apparently led police on a wild chase, a shootout. this morning, one is dead, another is at large. place here in watertown telling people to stay in their homes, do not answer the doorbell. one of the suspects, after engaging in a wild chase and a dramatic shootout here tonight. this all began last evening in cambridge, massachusetts, at the campus of m.i.t., when a police officer investigating a distu disturbance was shot and killed. the two suspects then carjacked a vehicle, according to police, led them on a chase here to watertown, throwing explosives out at the officer, we're told. then that ensued into a prolonged exchange of gunfire into which one of the suspect was killed. authorities, again, tell us these two men are the same ones identified in the photographs yesterday released by the fbi. nbc's pete williams is standing by now in our washington bureau with more. pete, what more can you tell us? >> well, quite a bit more, lester.
