the 1985 earthquake did $7 billion of damage in modern dollars from the maria to santa cruz in watsonville. the $5 billion estimate is just the starting point. when you factor in all the homes that may be at risk, that number explodes, something like $85 billion. that would put it around the cost of hurricane sandy. again, this is a total worse case number. the worst was hurricane katrina, $160 billion. those estimates are based on rebuilding. there are so many unknowns about that. we have a shortage of construction crews in the san francisco bay area. presumably many will return to help build. here is one, the effect op budgets, cities and counties, the evacuation centers, rescues, firefighters. no tourism dollars are going to come in for a long time. no tax dollars as well. remember, if your house burned down, even if it suffered just 10% damage, you are eligible to ask for an emergency suspension of your property tax. i'm going to tweet out how to file that appeal. there's no reason to pay property tax if it's a wreck. >> the land of the property. >> the city and county are spending mon
