so pajaro is a small farming community near watsonville about 53 miles south of san jose and 20 miles south of santa cruz. when that levy broke, water rushed into the town and flooding parts of watsonville, forcing thousands to evacuate. wilson walker talked to some frustrated people about the wet muddy mess. >> the water came right there. right here, you can see how they were full of dirt. but my problem is the water went into my basement. >> reporter: roberto estrada spent the day cleaning up the mud around his home. that job will be nothing compared to getting rid of what is inside it. >> you could see the water, it's full of water in the basement. >> reporter: the basement holds five feet of water and mud. the family has been faced with difficult living conditions for about two days. [ speaking non-english ] we have no water over there. i went to collect some water. >> we don't have any food, we don't have any water. we have one packet of water, bottled, and so that's why i decided to just leave my home. >> reporter: some who decided not to evacuate and ride out the height of the

very heavy rain does linger from santa cruz over the watsonville. morgan hill up to the southern edge of san jose. we do have some areas down there that are seeing some flooding risk continued. you can see that reflected here in our flooding risk map. a flood advisories continue along the bay shore, but especially the santa cruz mountains and yes, we're seeing a flood warning there from half moon bay along coastal san mateo county, due to still a lot of water flowing into those small streams towards the coast. now rainfall becomes a lot less widespread and a lot less intense as the morning goes by by noontime. we're pretty much done with it. still mostly cloudy, though, by the afternoon. we're looking at increasingly clear skies and lots of sunshine to close out your wednesday. as for thursday, a couple of passing clouds. and yes, we could see n sprinkle or 2 in our mountains for the bay tomorrow, but we're not going to be seeing those for the urban areas friday saturday and sunday are going to keep that dry trend going. so it does look a lot drier

starting in santa cruz county, evacuation warnings for low- lying areas in watsonville and some areas around the creek. in monterey county, evacuation warnings in the carmel river, the river lagoon and flooding is possible outside of those areas. these are some spots with the worst flooding during storms earlier this year, including salinas river with acres of farm fields inundated. roadways were impassable and there was concern flooding would cut off the monterey peninsula from the salinas valley. that did not occur, but people know that they need to be prepared. officials want people in the evacuation zones to be prepared to leave if they are issued evacuation orders. if you have large animals or you need extra time, you should leave as soon as possible. >> to the east bay where people in castro valley are closely watching an unstable hillside that partly gave way in january. >> live to the area now as people are doing what they can. >> reporter: it is coming down and i am in the backyard of one of those homes that was affected in january from all of those storms. now i want to show

i'm standing here in watsonville, an agricultural community south of san jose and are san francisco, and road closures here are everywhere, essentially mudslides in the hills that surround this area have shut off access to major arteries back and forth, and that's really just the low lying areas. schools here are closed. people here are under evacuation orders. as you trace the water path up into the mountains, you can imagine just how terrible it is up there because as this rain falls, and the important thing to note here is that this is a warmer rain. i'm standing here much more comfortably than i was even 24 hours ago. it's probably 15 degrees warmer than it was yesterday because this is all this tropical moisture coming in here, and that of course causes snow melt risk at the lower elevations where snow has fallen. that creates flood risk there and then as you get into the very highest elevations in places like tahoe, yosemite, that's where rainfall into existing snow loads and makes it much, much heavier. that's why we're hearing reports across the state of structures collapsing
