what's waymo's competition look like? well, i mean, waymo is unique in that it remains the only company that has actually surpassed the testing phase and is now regularly giving paying customers rides. cruise. however, what you're seeing on the screen, they bowed out of the robotaxi business earlier this month. so who's coming up the rear? well, now you have amazon's zoox. they actually recently started testing their vehicles in san francisco. and amazon is for like me and you as consumers or is it delivering goods. well so they their hope is to actually launch a robotaxi service just like waymo has. and similar to cruise, they haven't given a timeline just yet. they're still doing testing. they're doing it though without a driver in the front seat, which is pretty huge. tesla, on the other hand, has made some pretty big promises. they hope to launch their own fleet of robotaxis next year. but important to note raj tesla still doesn't have permission from state regulators to actually test without a human driver in the fro

it's worth noting here waymo is owned by google. senior investigative reporter bigad shaban has a closer look. waymo says its fleet of driverless cars has now surpassed more than 25 million miles traveled on public roadways here in the bay area and across its other markets in los angeles, phoenix and austin. to compare its safety record against human drivers, waymo partnered with consultants to review insurance claim data to see just how often humans and driverless vehicles are found to be at fault in car crashes over a six and a half year period. waymo says its cars were named in 90% fewer collision related insurance claims compared to human drivers. crashes involving waymo cars resulted in nine property damage claims and two other claims involving bodily injuries. but during that same time period, waymo says insurance data shows humans likely would have faced 78 claims involving property damage and 26 bodily injury claims. given the data that we have, we are seeing significant reductions in collision involvement. the total number

but really, the main show in town is google's sister company, and that's waymo. in fact, they're the only company right now to actually be able to surpass the testing phase and regularly offer paid rides to passengers. yeah. very popular. people take them a lot, but there's been some serious safety concerns about those waymo cars near schools. yeah, we actually surveyed some 30 crossing guards stationed at more than 20 schools across san francisco, and nearly 1 in 4 told us they experienced some kind of close call with a waymo driverless car, saying that they were actually almost hit while in the crosswalk, helping to guide students and families across the street. now, at the time, waymo told us that they take these concerns very seriously and they continue to stand by their safety record, saying that they have driven some tens of millions of miles driverless. there have been no deadly collisions. and in terms of even serious injuries, according to the federal government, which tracks these crashes, there have only been two. okay. dozens of companies doing this.

and they've got other great businesses like waymo, cloud computing, youtube and others.package. >> youtube has more streamers than netflix. >> so andrew, i was really excited to see that you had some retail stocks on this list and was once with exposure to china, which i thought was kind of interesting. so let's take alibaba first. what is it with that company that so much excites you? >> well, you know, alibaba is the leader in china and e-commerce is also leading cloud computing play in china. it's been out of favor for many years. stocks trading around 90 right now which is only about ten times next year's earnings. it's got a lot of cash on the balance sheet. about a quarter of the market cap is right now in cash. and it looks like the chinese government may be taking a more favorable attitude toward the homegrown tech companies. the big issue, though, is china, its economy, how well it's going to do and also how the trump administration is going to be dealing with china. i think there could be more bark than bite with trump on china. so i think it's an out of favor

i mean, as tesla and waymo, who are the leaders in that area, roll it out. i think those concerns are overdone. it's a very well-run company. i think they may come around and the stock is trading pretty inexpensively now. it's trading around $60 a share, which is less than about 25 times next year's earnings and a very strong free cash flow. >> you're also sticking with one of your picks from 2024. alphabet made the cut this year. why are you still optimistic after a great run in 24? >> well, alphabet was a great performer last year, was their best choice in 2024. overall, though, we had a tough year in 2024, partly because hertz, the rental car company, did poorly. but alphabet is still looking quite good. i mean, the stock is one of the more reasonable of the maj7 trading for about 20 times next year's earnings. it looks like their strength in search will not be affected too much by some of the ai trends as they embrace it. this quantum computing news this past week where they developed this chip just shows their engineering capabilities, and they've got o

i could see one day waymo being its own company.bout even artificial intelligence and just sort of the success or the perception that chatgpt and these other guys are doing ai and he sort of looked at me like waymo is the most real world ai machine that exists. so it's interesting to see those two now pull ahead in a big way and cruise is now -- gm unfortunately has spent an enormous amount of money. >> i know. and did we ever really think that one of the legacy auto makers were going to be the lead when you're up against these incredible big tech companies? >> that's the question, though. do you think that legacy players can ever get out of their way? >> do they need to? in saying something positive about mary barr and gm, the stock has done incredible. in areas where they can still play i think they can succeed. would i want to go up against tesla and, you know, waymo in terms -- i'd let them do it and then i'd like license it. >> look, that was the model or at least the way people thought about like stellantis. they never really

annmarie: waymo did announce they will go to miami in 2026. can tesla bully waymo out-of-the-way?o three players in the autonomous robotaxi space. waymo is ahead of the curve versus tesla. the way tesla is approaching this is different than everybody else, does not have a suitcase verse of sensors on the roof of the vehicle. the vehicles will look normal. consumers will appreciate in normal looking vehicle as opposed to a frankenstein vehicle. i think ultimately the way tesla is approaching this with the cameras in the vehicle will impress a lot of folks and might allow them to shoot the gap. dani: we have tesla taking the lead, you have waymo far behind. is there a future of uber and lyft in this? john: i cannot comment on them directly but i think the companies that own the software and the hardware together are going to be the winners and that would include gm. annmarie: you said you think in terms of robotaxis and the rollout of this is underpriced on tesla. what target should we be looking at? john: the launch of the robotaxi fleet and sing these vehicles operate on a semiaut
