. >>> our correspondent wayne hay joins us from brisbane, where peter greste's parent come from. so, wayne, what has been the official rehabilitation, and tell us more about his parents' reaction? >> well, i have to say there has been widespread condemnation around australia following the verdict from the media point of view. it has been a massive story. the media has been leading with the story, the sentence handed down to peter greste and his colleagues throughout tuesday. politically parliament sat, so early on the issue was raised in parliament in the capital canberra on tuesday morning. we heard from the prime minister tony abbott, who, again, reiterated that there were correct paths to go down. he didn't come out and criticise the egyptian government, saying he didn't want to take part in megaphone diplomacy, pointing to the hope that there could be intervention by the egyptian president in the case of their australian national peter greste. we know that the man who is basically the second in charge at the egypt embassy here in australia was summoned to a meeting with the au

. >> thank you and that is wayne hay where peter greste's family is from. we go to peter thompson at the doha center for media freedom and as news of this verdict sinks in and let me just remind our viewers peter greste seven years and fahmy and seven and three for possession and a few other colleagues are tried in abstention and all get ten years and as this starts to sink in what is your reaction and thought process here? >> i think the reaction you can see from everyone who is speaking about this case so far is total shock. the australian government's reaction talking about the best way to go about trying to remedy the situation, i think that is what people are going to be looking into now. there are three journalists here who all have sentences in cairo who need to be talked about. it's really a shocking result and one i don't think anyone was expecting especially considering for instance the australian prime minister the statement he released and it seemed like everyone was hopeful to see a positive outcome. >> we spoke to someone from amnesty internat

. >> correspondent wayne hay is live and wayne pretty strong words there from the foreign minister sayinghey will follow a course of action but what lines of communication are open between the australian and the egyptian government? >> reporter: well, just today on monday we heard from the australian prime minister and julie bishop before this verdict was handed down, prime minister saying, confirming over the weekend he had a phone conversation with the egyptian president a al-si si who receivd this terrible sentence and voiced his concern and said to the egyptian president that this could be an opportunity for a p.r. coup is how he termed it if peter greste was not treated harshly. well, obviously he and his al jazeera colleagues have been treated extremely harshly but julie bishop is saying the government will take this to the highest level again to see the there can be some sort of intervention from the president in the case of specifically peter greste. >> what sort of leverage do they have though, wayne? >> reporter: it's very difficult to say. i mean, they were asked, julie bishop
